If you’ve found your way here via the mailing list or word of mouth, welcome. This category is the new home for the Ubuntu Australia Local Community (LoCo) as we work through a reboot for 2026 and beyond.
The AU LoCo has been pretty quiet for a few years, but there’s been renewed interest recently, and the response from the community so far has been very encouraging. The aim is to rebuild in a way that fits how people participate today: online first, inclusive, and flexible.
Right now this is about listening and setting foundations. There’s no fixed roadmap yet, no heavy commitments expected, and no assumption that people have lots of spare time. If you want to follow along quietly, that’s fine. If you want to help with small, well defined tasks, that’s great too.
Over the coming weeks we’ll be:
refreshing documentation and team resources
setting up primary communication channels
gathering ideas for activities that fit different interests and availability
sharing updates as things take shape
If you’d like to get involved, the simplest way is to reply here and say hello, or let us know what kind of things you might be interested in (technical, documentation, accessibility, events, or just general community).
More updates soon, and thanks to everyone who’s already reached out or offered help.
Hi, just saying Hello for now I found my way here through the mailing list have been dabbling in Ubuntu since about 2006 and have been a member of the Ubuntu Australia loco for a few years since before it went quiet have never really contributed actively but would like to contribute a bit more now that there is some renewed activity.
Hey Adam! Great to see you here and awesome that you’re keen to get involved again.
We’re still in the early stages of the reboot, so any extra hands (or brains!) are genuinely helpful. What sort of things do you enjoy doing: events, docs, helping newcomers, testing, talks?
If we end up doing an UbuCon later this year there’ll be heaps of ways to pitch in (talk ideas, activities, helping on the day, manning a booth, etc). And with Ubuntu 26.04 landing in a few months, a release party would be a perfect first “easy win” if you (or anyone) feels like organising one.
I’m interested enough to help, I think. I’d like to be involved for now, but may bow out if I get too busy. I can’t commit any more than my interest at this stage.
It’s good to see reboot of Australia LoCo Please feel free to reach out @loco-council (although our term has been expired a few days ago) if you need any help! We’ll be looking forward to see Australia LoCo’s activities!
I poked my head up & said hello on the mailing list, so I’ll do it again here.
Melbourne is my home city. I’ve never been involved with a LoCo or LUG, but have associated them [mentally] as a Linux version of CP/M & OS/2 groups I associated with long ago in Melb. PC User Group (& Eastern Suburbs..), so maybe my idea is completely wrong anyway.
I’m sure interested in following, learning more, and helping out with stuff if I’m able.
