Ubuntu 26.04 LTS - The Roadmap

I am sorry, you felt that my post was inappropriate. I was and am in praise and appreciation of awesome developers of ubuntu. I will delete this post.

However, i have read the community guidelines again. if possible please tell me what i have done wrong in this post requesting tiling extension for a LTS release

The actual comment with the very negative vibe has already been deleted and a moderator comment was posted, it must have happened while i was writing and posting my reply so it’s a tad out of context now. However, this is not the place to discuss such things any further imho.

Let’s get back ontopic now from here on and discuss the roadmap for 26.04.

Returning to the topic, I have tested the latest version of Showtime, 49.1, in the Resolute repositories. I’m happy to know that it has a screenshot function like Totem and VLC. The application’s look is very modern compared to Totem, but I think I will get used to it.

A post was split to a new topic: Ubuntu 26.04 Showtime Bug

Note that most of the image loading in ubuntu (including the desktop background, or opening them via loupe) is already happening via a rust library that relies on bubblewrap to perform all the image processing in a sandbox.

So, we’re already in a quite good spot, I’d say!

EDIT: on your specific question, I also opened this upstream issue though.

Seems like 26.04 is going to be yet another solid release!
Resources as the default system monitor is especially a nice change.

Speaking of change, I know not everyone has the startup sound enabled, but would it be possible to have the default startup sound be the one used from Ubuntu 6.10 and onwards? I think that’s the most iconic one and the one most people that have used Ubuntu are familiar with. I don’t think I would be the only one happy to hear it again.
I know it’s not too important of a change, but it would just be nice to see (or rather hear) this startup sound come back in an official capacity.

This would be the startup sound in question: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1JW-7AY0Tq6MNOl9u5XcTYxCDJYFi8pCl/view?usp=share_link

In any case, I am looking forward to 26.04, thanks to everyone involved!

Owo, that would be really cool! Like the 24.10, right? I’d love to see that too

A question. We’ve seen that the tilings extension won’t be changed for now, but has there been any consideration given to adding any other default Gnome Shell extension to make navigation on Ubuntu even easier than it is? I understand that extensions like Dash to Panel are too disruptive for what Ubuntu aims to be, but an extension (a ‘Show Desktop Button’) to show the desktop directly without needing to use the GNOME command (Super+D), for example, could be a good idea. Thank you very much again.

You can already customize it by setting org.gnome.shell.ubuntu’s startup-sound to a file path (e.g. /home/user/my-sound.ogg).

If you are using Ubuntu with the standard gnome-shell to show the desktop you can just move the mouse to the dock and rotate the mouse scroll wheel.

Will App Center also be able to handle flatpak apps?

Yes, but not yet.

The long term goal is to manage applications regardless of the packaging format. I believe that the format should be irrelevant to the user and their experience.
In the shorter term, for 26.04, we’re focusing on closing the gap in managing deb packages, so Flatpak support won’t be available immediately.

Is 26.04 moving from dbus-daemon to dbus-broker?

I am posting this message as an apology. Although I am new to this forum, I have been an Ubuntu user for many years. I began using it as my primary development platform just over a year ago.

I have great respect for Ubuntu and its developers—Ubuntu has demonstrated remarkable stability and reliability for over two decades, with a consistent schedule of releases and strong long-term support every two years.

My intention was never to offend anyone. While I personally have reservations about Snaps and always remove them after installation, I have refrained from speaking negatively about them on the forum. From my perspective, Snaps represent a questionable design choice by Ubuntu, a view that is reflected by many community discussions.

I sincerely apologize if my comments regarding Flutter caused any discomfort within the forum or the Ubuntu community. I recognize that expressing criticism about the Ubuntu-installer being written in Flutter was not appropriate here. However, concerns regarding Flutter’s sustainability and future are widely discussed among developers, especially after Google significantly downsized the Flutter team. This has raised doubts about Flutter’s ongoing viability and investment levels. Many consider it a bad choice for application development. Only time will reveal the outcome—whether my concerns or Ubuntu’s strategy proves more accurate.

My comments were in response to a message highlighting issues with Flutter applications on the “Tiling Shell.” I am unsure if you were the moderator who removed that message or another, but I ask that you kindly review both of my original posts in context.

Please accept my sincere apologies for any unintended offense my remarks may have caused.

Finally, I believe it is unproductive to respond to concerns by dismissing others and suggesting they switch to alternative platforms. Such exchanges do not foster constructive dialogue.

I’m not sure if it’s appropriate to mention this here, but we have a known bug that has been present since Ubuntu 18.04.
For new users, it would be great to fix this bug and enable the ability to install corporate certificates through the graphical interface.
I really hope the fix is ready for the release of Ubuntu 26.04.
