Ubuntu 26.04 LTS suggested changes

Can you create a separate version for games and separate updates from the business version?
ubuntu game 26.04_lts

How would this version differ from standard Ubuntu? All the necessary drivers can be installed via GUI and game launches are available in the store

Why not use a paid store with special app support activated via a serial number, with five years of support at a price of $20 for long-term support (LTS) versions? This way, users would have special support for featured apps in the store for a long period of time.

Discussion moved to the lounge as a more appropriate fit and was originally posted to

Have you tried Ubuntu GamePack or Pop!_OS?
From what I’ve heard, both of them offer very good gaming support and might already provide what you’re looking for. I don’t have a lot of experience with gaming on Linux myself, but these two distributions are often recommended.

We are not saying that a system completely separate from the basic version should be built. Only an option (game mode) such as (power saver) can be added.
The idea is to prioritize processor and graphics processor resources, reduce background tasks, and disable notifications and updates.
(There is a power saver option, but no game mode option.)

You guys deserve a HUGE WELL DONE!

I’ve been messing with Linux for a long time, mostly on raspberry pi devices where I have a significant Node Red project but never on my main computer(s) because in the past every time I looked to replace Windows with Linux the path was just too quirky, too complicated and took too much time figuring out how to do this or that ā€˜thing’ that Windows just seemed to do.

NOW however with MS telling me (over and over) my W10 O/S is dead and pressing me to go to W11 with the implications that has … well … I said enough, I’m moving to Linux.

After saving all the stuff I needed to save (backup) I created an Ubuntu boot USB, closed my eyes and pressed REBOOT. My machine was migrated to Ubuntu 24.04.3 LTS & Gnome 46.

I use a laptop as my primary office (and programming) computer but it sits hidden in a large drawer of my office desk, all wired up behind the scene. I have an external monitor, multi USB port pod, wireless keyboard and mouse, external optical drive, etc… IT ALL WORKED, RIGHT AWAY, NO MUSS, NO FUSS. Nothing to ā€œfigure outā€.

Access to my Synology NAS was simple (no samba stuff, nor hours playing with fstab). Static IP → done! My HP laser printer just worked. RDP established in 30 seconds. The install even knew I had an external monitor and provided for it without me needing to do anything. I was amazed and significantly impressed.

THE MIGRATION TO UBUNTU 24.04.3 LTS COULD NOT HAVE GONE ANY EASIER OR SMOOTHER!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! For all the time and effort all of you put into getting Ubuntu (Linux) to the point where it is now a very serious alternative to MS W … where one no longer needs to become a Linux expert to use it any more. Even installing add-on stuff is so much easier now then past experiences.

I am absolutely thrilled with my new Linux - Ubuntu experience. IF NO ONE HAS TOLD YOU YET, YOU GUYS ARE ALL AMAZING.

I’m asking again, I would like to see the clipboard history feature on Ubuntu.
I use and recommend this GNOME extension: https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/4839/clipboard-history/

Newer macOS will have this feature and Windows already have it since Windows 10.

There’s one change i’d like to see and that is with the snap packages, say for example the App Center. It’s used by Xubuntu and maybe other flavors but one thing that stands out is that it doesn’t use the default theme of that flavor nor themes one applies, it keeps using it’s own ā€œgnomeā€ theming. Also when the buttons are move to the left for example it doesn’t happen with the App Center.

Iirc there are some more apps but can’t recall which ones that have the same behaviour.
I think this should be fixed, if possible of course, so the snap apps fit in better in the flavor you use no matter which theme is applied to the desktop environment.

It’s one of the reasons why the App Center isn’t included on Ubuntu Unity.

I suggest that those in charge of the release issue two versions: Ubuntu LTS and Ubuntu List.
The List version will be supported like 26.10, 27.04, and 27.10, using only Gnome without modifications.
The LTS version will use snap and will not use any packages except with approval.

The closest example of this system is
Red Hat Enterprise Linux, which represents LTS releases, and
Fedora, which represents List releases.

That is mostlikely never going to happen.
Red Hat and Fedora are a totally different thing and two different projects: Fedora is a independent community driven distribution, Red Hat is a distribution based on Fedora and Red Hat Inc. is a American Software company with IBM as parent company. Red Hat uses Fedora as testbed for newer RHEL releases.

Canonical/Ubuntu has two separate releases the interim releases and one LTS release. The interim releases can be considered as a testbed for the next LTS releases. In this case it’s one and the same Linux distro project.

Besides that, Ubuntu modifies the Gnome desktop to keep it easier accessible and usable out of the box. Using Gnome without modifications would be a step backwards and not as userfriendly and needs a bit more of a learning curve for new comers.

2 posts were split to a new topic: Differene between Redhat and Fedora

Another suggestion:
Is there a chance that Systemd-boot will be used in the future instead of GRAB2?
I’d like to hear the developers’ pros and cons in detail, as Systemd-boot has evolved significantly recently.

Using the GNOME session would basically get almost there

Can we move dbus (both daemon and socket) to start before you have to enter a luks crypt password? ( this would enable bluetooth keyboards to be able to enter the disk encryption password at boot time ).

Currently (25.10) dbus starts after sysinit.target and basic.target - which means you cannot get the bluez bluetooth daemon to start.

I modify both dbus.service and dbus.socket systemd scripts, although I’m sure it could be better

#After=sysinit.target basic.target
After=plymouth-start.service

The reason I am writing this proposal is because of my field of work in customer devices.
Most customers are simple users who do not have in-depth knowledge of software. They use computers superficially and are not interested in the intellectual battles between programmers. They use Windows or Mac.

I did not address financial issues regarding copying costs. I only talked about a simple version and another that is more advanced and professional.

Over 20 years in IT, I’ve worked with all types of clients, from consumers to corporate clients. Your comparison to Windows editions isn’t entirely accurate. Windows is initially developed with corporate funds, targeting the corporate market, and then simply scaled back for those who don’t need corporate features, in order to generate additional passive income and acclimate them to the product. Open-source solutions are initially developed in opposite directions, and therefore funding the development of two solutions simultaneously is very difficult, and in some cases, impractical. Essentially, an open-source product is created by a small community, and it’s not practical to fragment their resources, while corporate funding goes toward developing corporate functionality, which can indirectly benefit consumers.

The letter for codename and animal increments with each release; 26.04 had to be RR, and the codename is resolute and animal raccoon as per Guess the release 26.04 - R - #125 by ilvipero, chosen by the late Steve Langasek

The topic is about the roadmap for 26.04 LTS and what they have planned, not for posting proposals on which way Canonical or Ubuntu should go. It seems to be a trend going offtopic all the time. Just my 2 cents.
