Ubuntu 26.04 LTS install

I’m currently a 24.04 LTS user. On Software & Updates app, I have the box for “Notify me of a new Ubuntu version” set to “ For long-term support versions” but I haven’t yet been informed that the 26.04 LTS version is available. What’s the recommended procedure (e.g. in the Software Updater app) for doing the upgrade from the 24.04 LTS version?

The recommended upgrade path does not open until the .1 release of 26.04. That said, there does exist a means to release-upgrade via terminal commands. Only if you want to “push” for the upgrade. We can tell you more if that is what you realy want to do, rather than wait.

Best practice for a successful release-upgrade to 26.04

1. Be Patient Wait until the supported release-upgrade window opens. Your system will prompt you. 25.10 users: Your window opens a few weeks. 24.04 users: Your window opens in August. You’ll see bad advice telling you to use do-release-upgrade -d. Don’t do it…unless you want to be a tester and know how to troubleshoot and report bugs properly. Using the 26.04 installer won’t upgrade your system. The installer will overwrite your system, erasing all data and configuration. 2. Backup your da…

A quick look at the release schedule on this site will tell you what you’re waiting for is still in the future (27 August), and it won’t happen until AFTER that date too.

Sure, if you’ve done your homework, you can force the upgrade now - but if you prize stability I still suggest waiting.

Please note the format, this is the proper way and will also help users to focus on your needs.

As already stated, if you value stability then best to wait for the first point release.

On my Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, with “Notify me of a new Ubuntu version” in Software & Updates set to “For any new version”, I get notifications (below) of 26.04 being available. So maybe that’s a way to upgrade to the current 26.04 release (not the point release).

Note: I did not do this upgrade, since I plan to stay on 24.04 LTS.

That looks like a bug to me as it certainly shouldn’t. 24.04 LTS isn’t upgradable to 26.04 LTS until 26.04.1 is released at the end of this month, no matter what notification cadence you are on.
