Ubuntu 26.04 ARM ISO desktop install needs more than 4GB RAM

Ubuntu Support Template

Ubuntu Version:
26.04 LTS

Desktop Environment (if applicable):
GNOME

Problem Description:
I downloaded the ISO for ARM. I wrote the image to a micro SD card.
I can boot the image and start the installation.
After a while gnome-settings-daemon tells me an application stopped and device memory is nearly full.
I know 6GB RAM is recommended, but I wasn’t expecting it to be an issue for installation.

I did get it working by adding swap memory, but that was not trivial (for me). Is there anything we can do to lower the memory in use?

Relevant System Information:
Libre Computer Alta, Amlogic A311D, 4GB RAM

Screenshots or Error Messages:

What I’ve Tried:
In the end I got it working by adding swap memory. But that might not be a trivial thing if you want to do a clean install and have no other storage available.

Use a lighter desktop session like XFCE or LxQt or even just Openbox or similar. Fewer resources used just for the desktop to exist

Thanks for the suggestion, but that would basically mean I have to get the installer for a lighter Ubuntu flavour to install Ubuntu.

Once installed with swap memory running (gets automatically set up), Gnome is doable with 4GB RAM.

I was hoping for a suggestion like, kill process X as you don’t need it during install.
