Ubuntu 25.10 doesn't shut down and I can't remote to it

Ubuntu Version:
25.10

Desktop Environment (if applicable):
I feel like an idiot but I don’t remember which environment I am running.

Problem Description:
First problem: Every time I shut down the computer. After a couple of seconds it powers back on and boots back up. I choose power and shut down. I’ve tried from the desktop and the lock screen and each time the computer shuts off for a few seconds. The light on the power button goes out. Then it powers back on and boots up. So far I’ve had to hold the power button in once it powers back on. It’s the only way it will shut down.
Second problem: I am unable to remote to the computer using Teamviewer. I installed it and it tells me that Wayland is detected. In order to have a better experience I should use an XOrg session. When I try to connect from another computer. It connects for literally one second then says session disconnected successfully. Yesterday after restarting Teamviewer on both computers and connecting at home, not outside my home network, it connected but said remote control was disabled. Then when I disconnected Teamveiwer crashed on Ubunutu. I did search in the forums and saw mention of Tailscale. So I signed up and I’m going to try using that but I would like to try and get Teamviewer working if possible.

Relevant System Information:
Dell desktop, Core i7 7th gen, 32GB RAM, 1TB hard drive connected to a 50 inch TV via HDMI to Display Port adaptor.

What I’ve Tried:
First problem: I have tried shutting down from the desktop. Then I tried using the shut down command from the lock screen.
Second problem: I checked the built-in firewall, it’s not running. I tried connecting from 3 different networks including a hotspot to my phone. I tried connecting from within my home network which did connect but remote control was disabled. Then Teamviewer crashed when I disconnected. I looked up how to start an XOrg session but I don’t have the option from the lock screen.

From Ubuntu 25.10 onwards Ubuntu (with Gnome desktop environment) does not come with an Xorg/X11 session anymore. A Wayland compositor is the default. The software is still in the Ubuntu repositories so it can still be installed.

Everything happens for a reason. Have you checked the motherboard UEFI settings to see if one of those settings is causing this situation?

You might want to check your BIOS settings. I am pretty sure there is an option in there about what to do after a “power loss” and one of the options is power back on.
This is just from memory, but I remember turning this on in my computer.

Thanks I’m going to check the bios settings later tonight or tomorrow. I will also try to install the Xorg/X11 and see if that helps the Teamviewer issue. Like I said I’ll be trying to use Tailscale too.

For Dell computers:

  1. Enter BIOS: Restart your PC and repeatedly tap F2 (or sometimes F12 to get to a boot menu) to enter setup.

  2. Check Power Settings: Look for settings like “Wake on LAN,” “Wake on USB,” “Wake on PCI,” or “Wake on RTC” (Real Time Clock) and disable them.

Hope that helps.

I had no time to do much of anything to the machine yesterday. I was hoping to install Tailscale at least but that was a bust. Hopefully I will be able to jump into the bios tonight and update tomorrow.

I finally got a chance to check the bios. All the power options were already off curiously. I did find one option “USB resume…” I can’t remember what the exact wording is now. I disabled that and finally I can shut down from Ubuntu. Thanks everyone. I lost wifi over the weekend so I wasn’t able to connect to the site.

I was also contemplating wiping 25.10 and installing 24.10 because of the issues I’m having with Teamviewer. Instead I decided to use Tailscale and then host a Rustdesk server to allow remote access.

Unless you meant to write 24.04 I would not recommend this move because 24.10 was EOL in July 2025.

On the other hand, 24.04 is supported until June 2029.

Thanks for that correction. I’m not fully knowledgeable on the distros. I probably will be installing 24.04. Again rustdesk on Wayland is experimental and recommends X11. 25.10 has become a bit of a headache for me so far.
