Ubuntu 25.04 Live Server ISO fails to boot on Dell R7715 (AMD Turin) with iDRAC10 Virtual Media

Hi,

I’m trying to install Ubuntu 25.04 Live Server (ubuntu-25.04-live-server-amd64.iso) on a new Dell PowerEdge R7715 (AMD Turin CPU). I’m mounting the ISO using iDRAC10 Virtual Media.

On boot, the installer hangs with the following message:

Unable to find a medium containing a live file system
Attempt interactive netboot from a URL?

At this point, the system is unresponsive to the virtual keyboard in the iDRAC console.

Some additional details:

  • The same ISO boots fine on an older Dell R7615 (AMD Genoa) server.
  • Ubuntu 24.04 Live Server ISO boots fine on the R7715 with the same iDRAC10 setup.
  • Firmware and BIOS on the R7715 are up to date.
  • I also tried adding kernel parameters like modprobe.blacklist=uas rootdelay=10, but the issue persists.

It looks like the Ubuntu 25.04 initramfs (casper) cannot detect the iDRAC virtual CD device on this hardware/iDRAC10 combination.

Questions:

  1. Is this a known regression with Ubuntu 25.04 and iDRAC10 virtual media?
  2. Is there a recommended workaround (kernel boot parameters, alternate way to mount ISO, etc.)?

Any advice or confirmation would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi,
it’s not so much of a workaround - but I was trying 25.04 because 24.04 doesn’t have NIC drivers for R770 with Intel e610 - and having same issue.
Ended up installing 24.04 and just building new 16.16 kernel deb elsewhere and adding via iDRAC virtual image.
At that point you could just point to 25.04 and update.
Like I said, not a workaround.
But definitively broken as well on Dell R770 / iDRAC10 (Intel)

cheers
