I want to start by saying Ubuntu 25.04 is a really great release thank you for your hard work.
It was well received by all the reviewers that I watch, but they all had the same complaints and express the same reason why they won’t use Ubuntu now me personally I don’t really care about this cause I don’t use it but I figured I would bring it up for discussion it’s well you probably guess it snaps.
I know it as purpose for easier maintaining and supporting packages but would it be possible for all the user’s that don’t like snaps that during install there is a toggle that says you want to use snaps or no or to make it easier to remove snaps or at least disable it for good this way many user’s who likes Ubuntu but not snaps could and probably would come back to Ubuntu.
Me personally I use Ubuntu but don’t use snaps and I live with it but I would appreciate it if there was a easy option to opt out of snaps because it does bring some annoyances sometime like Firefox as snap i always uninstall it on fresh install because I use brave so i uninstall the snap of firefox but every upgrades I do it re installs it automatically It’s not the end of the world but it’s annoying so I think if there was an option like that people’s opinion on Ubuntu of not caring about user’s and forcing snaps would disappear or at least diminish.
Anyway, just my 2 cents, thank you again for this great release
I know about Linux mint i not dumb I’ve been using Ubuntu and linux since 2012 and i’m not a dumb user either i was simply pointing out that many linux user’s not me obviously because i use Ubuntu but they like Ubuntu performance but refuse to use it because of snaps that’s all.
Many user’s come from windows and left windows because of force software or ads etc… on them so unfortunately when they seen force snaps it reminds them of windows.
And no it’s not called linux mint because linux mint doesn’t have interim releases with newer software and hardware stack they are starting to push the hardware stack but software remains old so no it’s not called linux mint.
That is just one person’s opinion. The minority, which are anti-snap, tend to be loud.
Appeal to authority fallacy refers to the use of an expert’s opinion to back up an argument. Instead of justifying one’s claim, a person cites an authority figure who is not qualified to make reliable claims about the topic at hand. Because people tend to believe experts, appeal to authority often imbues an argument with credibility.
I don’t understand the hate perse but i understand where some people come from the auto install/ updates perhaps this can be turned off in the setting?
I know thats the reason why mint doesnt use snaps because it gets rid of the deb one they believe in choice and a users control over their system according to a blog post from them.
Coming from windows to ubuntu as a new user it does feel very windowsy if you know what i mean?
so atleast the option to turn that of by giving people the choice like maybe a screen pop up we see you are using the firefox deb why not use the snap because of this and that do you want to switch done.
Anyway on a unrelated note i somehow turned off auto update for firefox snap somehow and dont get messages there is a update either how can i fix this?
