If you want to first try and see how Ubuntu looks and feels, trying it in a VM might be a good idea. Keep in mind though that this will not give you a good idea how well the hardware is supported since the VM to the OS looks very different than running bare metal.
The concept work will probably continue based on 25.04. The actual 25.04 release is stable so I don’t expect new features to be backported to that.
We are currently in a somewhat unusual state where the 25.04 is a bit ahead. It is possible though to update a concept installation to 25.04 and similarly the concept ppa can be enabled on a 25.04 installation.
When will the 25.04 concept image be released?
Are there any plans already?
So it’s best to stick with the concept.
Tough decisions.
When I was still using Ubuntu, I tested performance by converting a video in HandBrake. The ThinkPad T14s heated up to a very high temperature, became scorching hot, and then shut down.
I repeated the same test on Windows. Surprisingly, on Windows, HandBrake was heavily throttled. CPU usage was low, the fans didn’t even speed up. Of course, the rendering took a very long time.
I’ve compared it with a Mac M1, and it looks much worse.
It seems that Ubuntu doesn’t check the CPU temperature and doesn’t throttle it when necessary.
Hi @tobhe,
I used the Omnibook X dtb for the Elitebook. I just installed ubuntu-x1e-settings and this fixed it for me as suggested by @icecream95. The output of /sys/devices/virtual/dmi/id/modalias
is
dmi:bvnInsyde:bvrF.13:bd03/21/2025:br15.13:efr17.42:svnHP:pnHPEliteBookUltraG1q14inchNotebookAIPC:pvrConfigID:rvnHP:rn8CBE:rvr17.42:cvnHP:ct10:cvrChassisVersion:skuA26TMEA#ABB:
as for @mrprmohammad and @icecream95 I checked the additional drivers but I did the installation offline.
Let me know if I can help in any way.
Thanks a lot
Best
J
The transplantation how-to is now online. Will probably do a Wiki out of it. A bit reluctant since I really don’t want to create too many of these odd installations. All these images are sort of handcrafted for <reasons>, and are only there to help bring up new-ish hardware.
Yes I run That and Return me this :

And I have another question. After I can see my battery percentage, I think my battery drains faster than windows! Could the driver that was installed be causing it? Will this damage my laptop battery?
back after a repair and more unsuccessful attempts to FINALLY say that i am thrilled to report back from a successful Ubuntu 24.10 Concept installation on my Yoga Slim 7x. after all of my struggle, my issue turned out to be that all of my usb drives were Sandisks. i picked up a Memorex stick from Target and installation went off without a hitch! i know sandisk drives have compatibility issues with other stuff so i should’ve figured this out months ago.
an aside: @tobhe thank you for doing the work to make Linux on X1E happen and for the time you’ve put in on this thread to help people figure out their problems. i have endless appreciation for the members of the linux community who work to make it better and more accessible, and the ubuntu concept project is an incredible case of that kind of work
Hello all! I was just wondering if there’s an audioreach topology for the ASUS Vivobook S 15 x1p42100? If not, do any of the others work?
hi octoturt,
what about the battery life of Yoga Slim 7x. after installing ubuntu. was it draining or the power mangement is good
i don’t have empirical data for it, but as far as i can tell i’m getting the same if not better runtime than i was under windows. i did switch out gnome for cinnamon, though, so ymmv
Hi. I have the thinkpad t14s.
I am happy it works. Things that doesn’t work audio, hdmi, camera and my dock does not recognize my laptop at all.
Any help will be welcome.
I am currently running 25.04. It works great of the most part sometimes I get purple screen of dead.
I am getting some errors on boot.
Of those 4 things: audio, hdmi, camera and dock,
The Camera and HDMI are still TBD on the kernel developer’s page:
Well, camera is listed as “started” which gets me checking his changelog weekly.
Sound is doable, but its a little bit of a case of Proceed at Your Own Risk.
glathe@ wrote a brilliant page about how to get sound working:
It covers the T14s, worked for me on my T14s, and there’s a few posts about it further back in this thread in the 770s.
I think you’re the first post I’ve read about getting a dock to work. There’s no special connector on the T14s, so I’m assuming this a USB-C based device?
Also, those firmware load errors are totally related to the sound card: glathe’s page will cover making those go away.
I successfully upgraded to plucky
But I seem to be on the old kernel by default. Should I pick a new kernel, and, if yes, which one?
Does anyone know if the video/gpu regressions in 6.14.0-3x have been addressed? E.g. the screen problems I reported above, or video hwdec? Otherwise, I will probably revert to an even older kernel.
It requires m4
sudo apt install m4
Thanks a lot man.
Learning this new way to get away from corporate.
Hello
I’m requesting for a new device support: Lenovo Yoga Air 14s. It’s a rebranded Slim 7x, which is only available in China. This thing doesn’t boot because $dtb
is an empty string. However, using dtb from Slim 7x works perfectly, and booting into installation media requires me to set dtb="devicetree /casper/dtbs/x1e80100-lenovo-yoga-slim7x.dtb"
in grub. I think this can be done automatically with little effort.
The best way to do this would be sending a patch to the linux-arm-msm mailing list for a device tree that imports the x1e80100-lenovo-yoga-slim7x.dtb
but overrides the compatible and model name, somewhat like https://patchwork.kernel.org/project/linux-arm-msm/patch/20250416094236.312079-4-juerg.haefliger@canonical.com/
Not sure if all the firmware stuff is actually needed in your case too.
Hey. Did you upgrade (do-release-upgrade) or a fresh install?
If you find a stabe new kernel, please let us know. I am still running 6.14-rc7-3_x1e on 24.10 since I have some blue screen issues on most all newer ones I tested.
btw, I borked my work desktop system when trying do-release-upgrade. Grub and ZFS is not always smooth.
