Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS keeps rebooting (on battery)

Ubuntu Support Template

Ubuntu Version: Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS

Desktop Environment (if applicable): GNOME

Problem Description: My ubuntu kept rebooting every 3 minutes or so when on battery. There is no overheating, the temperatures from the output of ‘sensors’ look normal. I am now typing this with the laptop plugged into an outlet and see that it has not rebooted more than 20 mins. after booting. So am not sure if this problem is related to my battery.

Relevant System Information: The laptop is a 710s plus IBM Touchpad and was already a refurbished piece when I purchased it in 2019 (maybe needs to be replaced??)

What I tried: The output of sudo dmesg | grep -i “EXT4-fs” looks normal, so at least everything was mounted properly it seems.

Any ideas on what could be happening?

Thanks!

Are you on the 3HCN25WW BIOS? This is the last BIOS for the system.

Thanks for the response. I have the 710S plus Touch and I confirmed I am on the last BIOS, 3NCN33WW.

With rebooting you mean your system doesn’t shut down - it just loses power and restarts at bios level? And this occurs only on battery? In this case a failing battery (or maybe a bad connection to the battery) sounds very reasonable to me.

Hello, thanks for your response. I just realized my title was incorrect as it does not keep “rebooting” but keeps “shutting down” (without booting again). It is likely a failing battery because yesterday I was able to work on it for hours while plugged in. Time to get a new laptop!
