Ubuntu 20th Anniversary - Party Planning

Building on the social media idea…you could feature a pic of the critter for the next release before it is announced with something like - “Who’s this? The star of our next release!”

I’ve been checking out more of the community conversations and social media posts lately. There is SO MUCH great work going on in different channels. It’s AMAZING!!! @kewisch and @popey - You are all over the place in the Ubuntu community and I’m impressed at how much effort you are putting into supporting the community. It is people like you that make this one of the best distros on the planet!

(Apologies if I’ve missed other major community contributors - still learning about the community :slightly_smiling_face:)

Looking at my previous comments regarding social media usage and sharing stories. You’ve got that covered. I think some cool celebration swag that everyone can get access to for a reasonable price would be good to consider.

I’ll keep lurking and maybe get the courage to join the effort in some capacity.

Thanks for being so supportive, respectful, and welcoming to all here!

I feel excited for Ubuntu turning 20 in October 20, 2024 but I made this image here.

And I put the slogan for it to say “20th Anniversary since the story of Humanity begins”.

What Ubuntu means to me? It means a lot! It was the first distro I installed in the summer of 2010! It was what led me down into the rabbit hole of Linux distro hopping. But I always came back. Except for the Unity desktop days. Unity would not run on the hardware I had during those times.
But here I am been using it since 24.04 beta and I am loving daily on both machines at home and one in the office for the day job. It’s the best it’s ever been.
I would like to point out the fact that the Linux desktop user base would not be what it is today without Ubuntu. It’s nothing less than amazing what has been built over these short 20 yrs.
So with that, here are some traditions I would love to see make a comeback:

  • LoCo’s - I understand they are unfunded these days. But there is absolutely no reason why us users cant make a bigger and more concerted effort to bring these back. They were a big reason the Linux desktop awareness skyrocketed at that time. Ubuntu has the worlds largest Linux community. Why are there not LoCo’s EVERYWHERE! I’m going to make a pledge to take the reigns of the Michigan LoCo soon.
  • Along with the LoCo’s. Ubuntu release parties. I personally never attended one in person but I watch several on YouTube back in the day. There is no reason with the communication tools we have today that there shouldnt be 100 live streams on YouTube on release days.
I’m going to go and just say that I think getting the community fired up about the LoCo’s again and sticking with them is the best way to go into the next 2 decades.
For the party I would suggest either a series of mumble servers, discord, servers, irc, Jitsi all being monitored and fed to someone with the capability to pull in guests and “call in” using VDONinja to combine all of it into a live stream that feeds to ALL of the streaming platforms. YouTube, Rumble, Twitch, Kick, Odysee, etc. Being that it is a celebration of the worlds largest Linux distro and the one that put desktop Linux on the map hitting the two decade mark. It’s go big or go home. Theres a reason Ubuntu is the number one distro and that is the community is what put it there.

This is absolutely brilliant. Ubuntu wouldnt be where it is today with out that audience of users!

Have you tried that Ubuntu 4.10 wallpaper that I’d remastered it?

I love it!
Thank you!
I had to do the fastfetch in the terminal for the screenshot. Gotta show some eye candy. Lol.

Do you know neofetch is available as a snap?

Yeah but Neofetch is archived as a project now. So no more development.
Plus I like fastfetch, lol.

All I’d know neofetch is no longer in development.

But if fastfetch is something you love, it’s good to hear that.

Its all pretty much the same thing. Just different tools to get the same information.
What ever works for one person may not work for another. But there is enough tools out there that one of them is going to work.
I dont even run it on the .bashrc al that much. Just when I know I’m going to want to flashy if someone is around. Lol.

Im hoping off for the night. It’s sleep time now. Talk with you all later.

I’m also want to make sure these Startup or Shutdown effect are available for anyone during Ubuntu’s 20 years.

Go see this link if you want to try out those 2 sound effects on your Ubuntu PC.

Remember, use (pw-play ‘location for an audio file’) if you want to play one of them during a login with Startup Applications.
