I’m using KRDC (Kubuntu 25.10, KDE 6.5.4 on both PCs). when I connect i can see only Konsole, but the whole shared window is very small, if I run other program, like Kate, it still tiny, even if I maximise it. It behaves regardles I choose RDP or VNC.
Interestingly, when my cursor is outside that Konsole app (but still in black area), mouse cursor has an X shape… is it a problem with X11 then? (but both systems use Wayland only)
What are the other solutions? (I connect to my network thru WireGuard)
I can do most of the things with SSH/terminal I guess, however for emergency situation, I wanted a full desktop connection as well (to my desktop PC - however I’m not a VIM guy I prefer GUI if possible, still, for emergency situations only)
Not sure if it will help, but I think sdl-freerdp3 is available in Plucky. That is what Kubuntu 26.04 has moved to instead of KRDC for Wayland sessions.
I have always used ssh for that. There are two ways to use ssh, one is by terminal and the other way is through your window manager. You should be able open your window manager, (I’m using caja in Ubuntu MATE), and just go ‘File’, ‘Connect to Server’, and you should get a dialog for entering the IP address of your other machine, port number (22), Type of connection (SSH), username and password. It also offers you the possibility to add a persistent bookmark and you can give the bookmark a name. Then you should be able to ‘see inside’ your other computer and drive it just the same as if you were sitting behind it.
Regardless of whether a person uses nautilus, caja or dolphin file manager, anyone using ubuntu should be able to connect using their graphical file manager using SSH in the manner I described, and get a nice normal graphical user interface even from a server.
Or at least we always used to be able to do that. Maybe something has changed that I’m not aware of. I feel like going and downloading the latest kubuntu 25.10 now to try it for myself to check.
EDIT: I forgot to mention you have to install openssh server in the other computer before you can connect.
EDIT: So I downloaded a Kubuntu .iso file and I was able to connect the file manager, dolphin, to my server and browse the files inside my server and potentially edit them with a GUI text editor or maybe work on files with other GUI applications. In the latest Kubuntu the dialog can be found in the left-hand side bar. Under ‘Remote’, there is the word ‘Network’ and then over in the upper right you will see ‘Add a network folder’, and you go from there. I hope this might be helpful to some but I am feeling a little embarrassed now for having said yesterday ‘a nice normal graphical interface’, it’s not the same as a remote desktop.
