Trying to print with HP_ENVY_Photo_6200_series_641030_USB

Ubuntu Version:

22.04.5 LTS

Desktop Environment (if applicable):

Problem Description:

I am trying to get my HP_ENVY_Photo_6200_series_641030_USB As far as I can tell I have it all setup to run including a usb connection from computer to printer. I can, for instance, go into "envy photo 6200 series" which comes up when it starts and print every thing they offer there, ie. Reports, info, etc about the machine (several pages of stuff). I can also print a colorful test print so I know I have all the ink I need.

To print I always have to press ‘connect’

I have an ip address (182.168.223.1 I do not have a Domain Name (not set)
The disgnostics result tells me that “Not Run” , from connected to the end.
Wireless is disabled, IPP is enabled, IPPS is enabled, etc.

All that being said when I, for instance, edit something, select part and press ^p nothing happens. I have no idea how to make the system print on the printer.

I set this up by using called “How to install networked HP printer and scanner on Ubuntu Linux” by Vivik Gite. I went through everything and should have a printer that will print with a usb connection with the computer.

I am a loss at what else I need to do.

Not sure what this means. I am running with Ubuntu 22.04.5, I have lots of memory, etc.

What I’ve Tried:

The only think I have tried is to make it print something from the computer and I have failed.

Did you install the hplip print driver and use that to set up your printer? It is available here - along with lots of other info. https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/gethplip I have been using hp printers for years with no trouble. Although Ubuntu can ‘see’ and set up a hp printer on its own many users use hplip. (I delete the printer Ubuntu creates natively and set up the printer using hplip).

Yes, I have hplip print driver installed.
hplip-3.24.4 (newest one I think)

Remain stuck. I can print all the stuff in the envy photo 6200 series (light in front of the printer) with no problem but cannot print from the computer. I suspect that I screwed up the printer in setup or installed the wrong whatever, etc. I can even send something to the printer but it tries to print, prints nothing and sends a blank piece of paper. It tells me to make sure I have the wi-fi setup which I have turned off and usb is connected but it doesn’t know it.

I used what I found in “How to install networked hp printer and scanner on ubuntu linux” I got quite a ways with hplip. I was using hplip-3.24.4 and when I did that I kinda blew everything up.

My suspicion is that I should delete the current print in the machine and then start from scratch. Delete EVERYTHING to do with hplip. Startout and startout from scratch as I have been dinking around with the present probably waaay too much.

Mysteries abound - thank you for the reply…

Yes - I would uninstall and start again. The latest version is 3.25.2 that you can get from https://sourceforge.net/projects/hplip/files/hplip/3.25.2/hplip-3.25.2.run/download

If you installed 3.24.4 from your Downloads folder you need to navigate to that folder cd Downloads cd hplip-3.24.4 and run the command sudo make uninstall

Of course - then to install 3.25.2 (assuming it is in your Downloads folder). Navigate to your Downloads folder and run at the command prompt sh hplip-3.25.2.run

Thank you for the reply…

I have done what you wished. I went to hplip-3.24.4 and then ran sudo make uninstall (two times - it remains)
I did this two times but 3.24.4 remains along with 336 items. I am temped to just delete it.
I suspect I gotta get rid of this before I go any further.

thoughts?

This may sound stupid but is your printer enabled?

I’m using Ubuntu Mate 24.04 and I was having a similar issue with a HP 6000 series printer
and one day I could not print from the computer and I started doing all the same things as you and come to find out the printer wasn’t enabled any longer.

In Mate I navigate to the printer by System>Administration>Printers.Once there right click on the printer and make sure Enabled is checked.I’ll make the assumption it’s similar in Gnome.

I have a question (one, I suspect that I should know)
How do you get “System/”?

I get to printers by going to Settings/printers/
I suspect its the same thing. I pick one of my printers and tell it to use it by default

Thank you for the reply…

I removed the old hplip and installed the new one. Then I ran hplip-3.25.2.run in a terminal (took it quite a long time to do everything).

Then I ran hp-setup
My problem now, is whether or not I have a driver installed. I do not know how to figure that one out. I can goto /Settings/Printers and I can find a driver to do the job. My main problem is how to get it so I can install it. On the other hand this may have been taken care of in all the previous stuff. I can go to the printer and print a test page but I could always do that. Printing something, however, is something entirely different.

Thoughts?

What Desktop environment are you using? I know you are running 22.04 but are you using Ubuntu Gnome, Ubuntu Mate, or other flavours of 22.04? Run this command in a terminal
echo $XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP

I suspect it’s the same also,it’s been a long time since I’ve even seen a Gnome desktop.

On Mate once I get to “printer” I click on it and a window opens up with a printer icon(s). The installed printer should have a green circle with a check in it next to the icon and if there is a “pause” icon over the printer it means it’s not enabled. If it’s not enabled right click on the printer icon and and click Enabled in the drop down menu.

Thank you…

Using Gnome

Curious as to whether this was not tried.

Its interesting. I have 3 different machines. I am currently updating one of them to 24.04 from 22.04.5 to see what happens. I installed 24.04 when it was first announced and that was a real mistake but, given what folks are saying its probably time to do this. When that happens everything, I think, changes. Programs, as far as I can tell all run, now, under snap, etc. I also suspect my Settings,Printers will also change as well. I also noticed that the 24.04 has also had an update as well. Interesting times.

So far the upgrade has taken over a half-an-hour and its only half done!

I expect everything will change. I will see…

On your Desktop, click on the lower left icon that says “Show Applications”. In the Search Box at the top type hp. There should be an option called HP Device Manager (hp letters in white on a blue background). Click on this icon and launch HP Device Manager - this should show you your printer and allow configuration changes.

Thank you for the reply. I am running with 22.04 there was nothing in lower left icon (including the icon - I suspect i am not sure what/where my desktop is (makes no difference). I do have a list of applications and I did as you suggested (search for hp) and I found it! It was interesting and so I thank you! I am not sure it will run yet but I am working on it.

Thanks again!!

I dawns on me. I have forgotten to mention that I have done all sorts of things to get my printer working. I have, for instance, done all the HP stuff (I think there were 3 of those). Anyway, I remain on 22.04.5 (I have now updated to 25.04 I think) and am still getting that one setup. Having a little problem with thunderbird but I am getting there. Anyway, in my 22.04.5 machine and my hp printer. It knows its there, it knows that its connected, etc. yet I have yet to see the word “print” anyplace. I used to be able to print by editing, say, any little thing, and I would have ‘print’ appear. I have also tried outlining something, etc. Just can’t print. Kinda strange. I will, however, keep on trying. There has to be a way!

My computer now tells me I have the printer when it starts but still does not print

I wonder, perhaps I should just delete everything I did and start all over.
