Hello. I’m new here but I need some guidance. Problem description below. Thank you.
Ubuntu Version:
24.04.4 LTS PRO (one machine)
Desktop Environment (if applicable):
GNOME 46
Problem Description:
I thought using Ubuntu pro version I won’t restart my laptop too much but it’s happening the opposite because lately when I turn it on after some time a pop up window appear describing some updates and after that I have to restart the OS.
Most of the updates are from Ubuntu itself. One last week and another one today (02/24/26)
Relevant System Information:
NA
Screenshots or Error Messages:
No error messages at all.
What I’ve Tried:
I’ve just restart the computer. But it is annoying like Windows (that I’ve removed from this laptop)

Didn’t find any similar post or problem.
I have a Ubuntu Pro subscription on two of my machines. It is my understanding that when there is an update/upgrade to the LInux kernel that the upgrade will take place without the need to re-boot in order to start running off the new kernel. I do not know of any promise that Ubuntu Pro means never having to reboot to make use of upgraded packages.
All updates come from Ubuntu unless we have added third party repositories. Packages are updated to fix a security vulnerability that has been detected and not just as part of making improvements.
It is my understanding that these packages that have been security patched will require a re-start in order to bring in the security fix.
We can delay or stop updates in Software and Updates>Updates tab. We can set when Ubuntu checks for updates. We can even set it to never. But I do not think we can stop Ubuntu from checking for security updates. On my system I have set security updates to Download and Install immediately. Frankly, I do not see the point in having a Ubuntu Pro subscription if we are going to set check for updates to Never.
It is usual for the user to decide if the OS re-starts now or later.
An insecure operating system when connected to the internet is a danger not only to the user of that machine but to the users of every machine connected to the internet.
I am happy that the developers of Linux and the developers of Ubuntu are working so hard to keep me protected.
This is only true if you use the livepatch service (you need to enable it explicitly after subscribing to pro), but that will not prevent your system from getting other non-kernel updates that would require a restart indeed … i.e. systemd (init system) or udev (hardware database) updates might ask for it regardless, there are quite some user-space apps that will do this… but indeed, livepatch should prevent you from having to reboot after a kernel update …
In my case ( I have PRO), I have removed snapd, therefore as livepatch is only available as a snap package, I have to reboot if there is a kernel update.
The livepatch is on but is not working with this kernel I guess. When I access the livepatch settings I’m not able to turn it on. See the results below:
