The Disappearing Mouse

Ubuntu Version

Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

Desktop Environment (if applicable)

Cinnamon

Problem Description

Lgitech wireless mouse freezing right from boot up. after some recent upgrade. The mouse pointer is stuck in the corner of the screen immediately upon startup. It will not budge. Then I tried, an olde travel mouse, which seems to work, but it has a sort cord. A hardware failure of a fairly new logitech mouse seems unlikely, but for now, I am getting myself a wired mouse tomorrow and try out the logitech on another machine.

Its the USB 3.0 radio shield trap or kernel driver hiccup…

in terminal-

sudo rmmod hid_logitech_hidpp

Your mouse will instantly fall back to the generic `hid_generic` driver. If the cursor unfreezes, you’ve found the guilty party!

thanks, I will keep that around for future reference.
the end conclusion was it was a hardware failure. for the wired travel mouse worked.

It seems that this was a slow progressive failure, but it must have been hardware. The mouse was an MX Master 4. A few times it had hiccups after a new upgrade from ubuntu, but eventually it froze completely. Give how it manifested I initially thought it was software, Mouse was still under warranty, and I got a new one and it worked. Only the new one has a usb-c plug, no more USB-A, but the nasty discovery was that the old one handled both my keyboard and the mouse, the new one handles only the mouse. So now I have two plugs, one for each device.
