Snaps Won't Open, App Center Will Not Open

Ubuntu Version

Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

Desktop Environment (if applicable)

GNOME

Problem Description

Snap store updated to app center following the resolution of a specific problem regarding the chown command in Wifi setting missing, Possible chown problem
App Center will not open and neither will snaps such as Firefox and VLC.

Most other apps work fine now such as Microsoft Edge, which was downloaded and installed from the website, debian files, and most flatpak downloaded apps.

Error Messages / Logs

cannot create user data directory: /home/observant/snap/firefox/8995: Permission denied

Similar response from running snap-store and VLC

When opening the flatpak Steam loader,

The unofficial Steam Flatpak app now requires user namespaces to be
enabled.

Check that the bubblewrap executable used by Flatpak, usually
/usr/bin/bwrap or /usr/libexec/flatpak-bwrap, is not setuid root.

If the file /proc/sys/kernel/unprivileged_userns_clone exists, check that
it contains value 1.

If the file /proc/sys/user/max_user_namespaces exists, check that its
value is at least 100.

For more details, please see:
https://github.com/flatpak/flatpak/wiki/User-namespace-requirements

Do you use a proper kernel over there ?
What is the output of:

uname -rv
6.8.0-142-generic #142-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Wed Sep 2 14:24:27 UTC 2026

@observant Most likely you are hitting this: Bug #2169038 " snapd 2.77.1 (rev 28254) AppArmor profile refresh... : Bugs : snapd

my snap version is 2.76.3+ubuntu24.04 unlike the user in the report you linked.

Additionally, I my device is not facing network issues. It is a permissions issue that is causing problems with the snap store and, in turn, my snaps.

The issue does not affect flathub apps nor apps installed from debian files.

Check whether snap-confine lost its setuid bit or file capabilities. The recursive chown on /usr from your earlier thread likely cleared them, and setting ownership back to root doesn’t restore them.

ls -l /usr/lib/snapd/snap-confine
getcap /usr/lib/snapd/snap-confine

A working one is owned by root and shows an s in the permissions from ls -l or a list of capabilities from getcap. If it shows neither, reinstall snapd and reboot.

sudo apt install --reinstall snapd

Any other command that now fails with a permission error can be fixed by reinstalling its package the same way. dpkg -S $(which <command>) shows which package that is.

Drafted with AI.

Sometime over the weekend App Center updated. Problem solved thank you for your help.
