(Snap) App Center keeps flickering under Xubuntu

Ubuntu Support Template

Ubuntu Version:
Xubuntu 25.10.

I tried out Xubuntu minimal edition for a short time, but after reading the advise I got in this topic Is it risky to enter your password in a terminal while a browser has a website open? I decided to switch to regular Xubunt, which means that I now have to deal with snap.

Desktop Environment (if applicable):
XFCE

Relevant System Information:
My hardware is difficult to describe, because my computer is not a brand factory computer, but was put together from individual pieces by a small independent computer shop. I do know that I have four Intel Core 3.30 GHz CPUs (original parts) and about 16 GB RAM (installed myself) and an overall 1 TB SSD (installed myself), with about 55 GB still available in the system partition and about 320 GB still available in the user partition.

Problem Description:
Now that I’ve tried out the Ubuntu Snap App Center for the first time in my time using Linux, I’ve discovered that in Xubuntu 25.10 its window keeps flickering. Sometimes, when it’s just open and I’m not trying to do anything, it doesn’t flicker. But when I try to make it do something that’s serious work for it, it can flicker really a lot.

By now I’ve installed all the Snap apps I want to install, and I’ve looked up how to keep them updated from the command line, so I don’t have to open the App Center for the time being any more. But it’s still annoying. And, of course, for someone with one out of a number of medical conditions which I thankfully don’t have, it would be a good deal worse than just annoying.

Oh, and one time, when I closed the App Center and had no apps except for a system monitor open any more, the system monitor still told me all the CPUs were at 100 percent or near 100 percent load until I rebooted.

If you want more relevant information, please tell me how I can look up my graphics hardware specs and driver information under Ubuntu.

I was hoping that someone using Xubuntu would offer to help. But seeing as no one using Xubuntu has suggested anything. I will start things off.

I am assuming that you have Firefox installed. I did a google search with this question.

how to identify graphic hardware in Xubuntu 25.10

You will find it interesting if you do the same search. Here is a little bit of what the AI came up with:

GUI Methods (Xubuntu Settings)

  • Additional Drivers: Open the Whisker Menu, search for “Additional Drivers”, and open it. It will list your graphics card and whether you are using proprietary (NVIDIA) or open-source drivers.

  • Settings Manager: Go to Settings ManagerAbout (or System Info, depending on your version) to see basic GPU information.

When you first installed Xubuntu minimal did you get the option to install third party software which would included video/graphic and audio drivers? Did you accept the offer?

I did accept the offer to install third party software during installation, but now, the Additional Drivers window tells me that I have nothing proprietary installed, and that there’s nothing proprietary available for installation, either. So, whatever is causing this, it’s apparently neither proprietary drivers nor a lack of proprietary drivers.

And the Settings Manager has neither an About nor a System Info entry.

@graymech However, when I used your suggested search query, I was sent to this Howtogeek page:

and the

glxinfo -B

command provided there got me
