Server docs: URL change incoming

Notice of planned update

On 4th March, the Ubuntu Server documentation URL will be changed:

from to
documentation.ubuntu.com/server ubuntu.com/server/docs

Both URLs are currently live, so you can already update your bookmarks and links to use the new URL. After this migration is complete, all of the old documentation URLs will be redirecting to the new one.

Although we plan to keep disruption to a minimum, there may be a short period of downtime on 4th March where the documentation isn’t available. The migration window is from 10–11am UTC, so any disruption will be during that window.

If you run into any problems on or after 4th March, please let us know as soon as possible!

What’s going on?

You probably noticed that the “new” URL isn’t so new…

Over the last year, the documentation that had previously been backed by Discourse has been migrated to GitHub and rendered in Read the Docs. There were some technical limitations that prevented us from migrating with the original ubuntu.com/server/docs at the time.

In the interim, we have been using the docs.ubuntu.com domain instead of the default Read the Docs domains, but we are now in a position to migrate back to using the original domain, with GitHub on the back end instead of Discourse.

Ubuntu Server is the first set of Ubuntu documentation to return to the ubuntu.com domain, please expect to see similar notices over the next few months for other documentation in the Ubuntu family.

While this will probably make navigation cleaner and more consistent, I have to admit I kind of like documentation living on separate subdomains :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

There’s something about a dedicated subdomain that makes the content feel a bit more… important and official.

That said, great to see the migration progressing — looking forward to the unified structure!

Just a quick update to announce that the migration has been successfully completed :tada: the old documentation.ubuntu.com/server URL is redirecting cleanly, and you can safely update your bookmarks and links to the docs (if you haven’t already). Thank you to @secondskoll for coordinating this change!

As always, if you notice anything not working as expected, please raise an issue so we can fix it.
