Screen Freeze on 25.04 Plucky Puffin

Problem Description:

I have a dual monitor setup. A couple of times a day I get one of them to completely freeze making me need to re-log (or restart if I can’t relog) to fix it. I can’t really reproduce it or find a common denominator when it happens. The other monitor is completely fine and functional (except the GNOME shell), I can’t continue using any apps that were already opened on that screen. GNOME shell also freezes, I can’t log out through the UI, I have to log out via run command dialogue. Screen completely freezes, including the cursor if it was on the screen. I can see my cursor on the other screen if I move it though. I can’t interract with anything on the frozen screen.

The backstory behind all of this is that I don’t necessarily think this is Ubuntu’s fault, I just don’t know how to troubleshoot it or where to ask for help. I got a new PC and have tried a couple of distributions. I’ve had this happen on Fedora 42, as well. I don’t use extra user extensions, and Fedora and Ubuntu don’t have any same extensions included by default. I’m including this because it might be relevant, just something I’ve noticed.

What I’ve Tried: I didn’t try anything relevant yet, no setting changes or anything like that. I’ve only tried turning the monitor off to see if it will fix itself. I should have probably disconnected it from power, though. I’ll do that next time it happens, I don’t know where else to start. I’m looking for either a resolution, or if you could just point me into the right direction where I should report this

So the gnome shell dies, and when you use plasma (KDE) instead, you don’t have the problem?
What about 24.04 or 24.10 both of which have gnome releases which have a lot of stability fixes?
On the face of it, you seem to have a mutter/gnome bug.
You can use a recent kernel even in 24.04.3 via the mainline app, if you need latest kernel for your new graphics card.

Sorry I just remembered that KDE was on another PC before this, while I was getting ready to switch to Linux. That’s garbage information in the post, I’ll edit it out.

So, I didn’t try installing 24.04 or 24.10 because I kinda had no idea what I was doing, or how releases are working, and I was under the impression that I needed a rolling release distribution for my hardware. So your advice would be to try 24.10, for example, and then update the kernel to the latest stable version? That would include GPU drivers, as well, if I understand correctly?

And I should probably report this bug somewhere, right? Like somewhere to GNOME community? Probably here https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/issues ?

I have the same problem every time the power saving mode activates the screen doesn’t come back to live and i have to forcefully turn off my pc from power button.

Is it really the same problem? Mine happens randomly, I can’t reproduce it willingly. Your might be related to something else. Maybe this? NVIDIA driver, Ubuntu 24.04 (6.11.0-21) don't wakeup after suspend or hibernate

I was able to ‘fix’ it by unplugging my monitor from power (I believe you only have to make your PC switch to one monitor setup, disconnecting the HDMI/DP might also work)

Any direction on what I should do with this is appreciated. I know you guys probably can’t fix it, but I want to report it to someone who could have some use out of it

I have same symptoms on Ubuntu Plucky Puffin. Screen freezes completely including mouse cursor. Audio output keeps going on. I don’t have a second screen connected. I have to force powering off my laptop. And I also can’t reproduce this. I am also running Gnome Shell, software is up to date.

report a bug against the package gnome shell. Include the system info and the logs. Make sure you indicate that it is 25.04
It will get looked at I would say.

I also have the same issue, but on the machine with the RX9070 XT I am using Fedora 42. I use a three monitor setup. The issue often starts with a single monitor, then sometimes the second (non-focus) monitor freezes as well. It also happens that all three monitors completely freeze. Plugging the DP cables out and in again sometimes helps, as well as shutting down some of the monitors. But this does not always work, or only after doing this repeatedly for a while.
The problem of all monitors freezing often happens when leaving a full screen window to switch to another window or screen.

Updating to a newer Mesa driver did not make any difference in my case.

EDIT: It seems like the most recent Mesa driver might have fixed this issue, according to some users, including the OP:

I didn’t have the issue happen since I’ve reported it last time, I’m waiting for it to happen again to gather info so I can report the bug (if will happen again).

How do we receive patches on Ubuntu regular releases? I see that my driver version is Mesa 25.0.3. On driver info it says 25.0.3-1ubuntu2. Do we get a special ubuntu Mesa drivers? I’m asking because the lads in the thread are saying it might be fixed with 25.0.5, do we get driver updates during Regular releases or do they come out on the next regular release? (again, idk if it will happen to me again, seems to be resolved for now). I’ve noticed kernel also says 6.14.0-15-generic, and the latest stable one is 6.14.5 so it got me curious, it seems to be different naming convention

generally if you need latest mesa, kisak-mesa fresh : kisak but it’s not active for 25.04 yet and it’s still 25.0 anyway.
With Ubuntu, you will get bug fixes at some point if they are important, and in fact the Mesa devs will probably backport them. My guess is that you should file a bug against the MESA packages, and see what feedback you get. I’m pretty sure the developers will want to incorporate bugs fixes from AMD that affect the latest AMD cards.

The kernel versioning Ubuntu uses and upstream’s is not comparable. I expect that stable kernel release for 6.14 will get to 25.04 each time, as 6.14 is the official kernel of 25.04 .

If you want to use a real upstream kernel, you can try the mainline app to see if it is available.
