RustDesk and Tailscale are awesome!

I finally got Tailscale and RustDesk installed on my 3 home computers. It is awesome and I would recommend it to anyone looking for remote access. Using the setting in RustDesk to allow direct IP connection. Since Tailscale provides the IP there is no need for a locally hosted RustDesk server. I’m sitting on my Windows computer with a remote connection to my Ubuntu and Linux Mint computers. This is awesome!

Hi Ricky,

It would be great if you could share the entire installation and setup procedures you used.

I am sure there are others who would find it useful and interesting and then we could move it to Lounge > Tips & Tricks

Thanks

For sure, sorry I’m just getting a bit used to the layout and process here.

First you’ll want to install Tailscale on your computers. You’ll find it here WireGuard® for Enterprise, there is a free option. The free option is limited to 3 users and 100 devices. Once you install Tailscale the computer connection will need to be accepted in the admin console. Then your computer will be given a Tailscale IP. The next step is to install the RustDesk client on all the computers too. You can find the installer you need on their GitHub Release 1.4.5 · rustdesk/rustdesk · GitHub . After you install RustDesk, on the left side where the ID and password are displayed click the three vertical dots. Click “Security” and scroll down to the Security section and click “Enable direct IP access”. You don’t need to change the port information or anything else. Just check to enable the option. Scroll back up and click “Set permanent password”, set a password to access the remote computers. This allows you to connect to the computers without using the ID and password shown in the RustDesk client. Once you’ve done that click on General on the top bar to take you back to the original screen. Enter the Tailscale IP where it says “Control Remote Desktop” and connect.

I’ve been using RustDesk for remote access because it provides good accessibility support and works well for me. I actually installed RustDesk on my VPS and used the VPS’s IP address to connect remotely, and that’s been very useful.

I haven’t tried Tailscale yet, but I’m looking forward to trying it out soon — especially to see how it works together with RustDesk for secure, direct connections.

I’ve only had it for about a week now. I really like it though it simplifies things a lot.

I tried Tailscale with NoMachine, which worked well. I haven’t tried RustDesk yet, but it’s on my to-do list.

Tailscale is an awesome product. One of its brilliant features is letting me use a home device (in this case, my Chromecast) as an exit node, so that when I have to use a public WiFi, it works as my personal private VPN. (My local hospital is like that: There is virtually no signal for data, so I have to use the public WiFi.)
