Resizing Ubuntu partition?

Ubuntu Version:
24.04 LTS

Desktop Environment (if applicable):
GNOME,

Problem Description:
Resize Ubuntu partition without losing data

I apologize for not being able to figure out how to post correctly or if I’m not in the right place but I’ve been trying to get some help for quite a while & have had to rely on google for the last few months to get anything accomplished. Maybe eventually I’ll be able to figure things out here but anyways here’s my problem or question. I finally got Ubuntu 24.04 Desktop installed in dual boot with Windows 10 on an Acer laptop. Everything is working fine but I messed up partitioning in gparted so I have an extra ext4 partition in front of my Ubuntu partition that I’d like to use most of the space & just leave like 500 MB so I don’t mess up any partition numbers. I already have it unallocated & ready to be used but I’m not sure if the data in the partition I’m resizing will get deleted. I’m going to try & upload an image. Thanks for any help

I have never lost any data using GParted to resize and move Ext4 partitions. If I understand you correctly, you want to resize /dev/sda6 into the unallocated space in front of it. I would be comfortable in doing that.

Keep in mind that we use Windows tools to manipulate Windows partitions (file systems) and Linux tools to manipulate Linux partitions (file systems).

Allow lots of time for the resizing to take place.

Always remember the golden rules:

  • Make sure you have rock-solid backups of both Windows and Ubuntu data before you start
  • Never manipulate partitions that are mounted

Best way to do this is from the liveUSB with GParted making sure to unmount all partitions before proceeding with the resizing.

If you have any doubts or questions, ask here first.

Thanks for the advice & help. I booted from a live CD ran Gparted & everything worked out just fine.
