Questions regarding Lubuntu 26.04 LTS

Hello,
I would like to ask the following questions regarding the upcoming Lubuntu 26.04 LTS:

Release Date: When will the new version be officially released?

Wayland: Will this version officially adopt Wayland?

LXQt Version: Which version of LXQt will be used in this release?

Best regards,

Lubuntu 26.04 LTS is an official flavor of Ubuntu, thus the actual release is handled by the Ubuntu Release team; meaning you can look at the Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Release Schedule for dates.

If you want to view what we have; you can always explore a current daily ISO; ie.

gives a pretty good clue; and being an ISO; you can download it, and give it a try too.

Given how close we are to beta, what we have no is probably a pretty good clue.

Our blog site does highlight a lack of resources the team has had recently; this was made clear (I felt) with the Lubuntu 25.10 Release Notes which can explain where we are.

I have installed the development version of 26.04 LTS on VirtualBox:
Currently the LXQt version is 2.3.0 and the standard window manager is Openbox of the X Window system.

Hello Lubuntu team,

I am currently testing the latest 26.04 daily builds/beta for deployment and automation purposes. Based on previous release notes and announcements, the goal for 26.04 LTS was to fully adopt Wayland as the default stack.

However, after performing a clean installation of the current beta, I found that Openbox on X11 is still the default compositor out-of-the-box. Furthermore, when I manually installed labwc and lxqt-wayland-session to test the Wayland environment, it felt very incomplete and half-baked (for instance, the GUI configuration tool labwc-tweaks is completely missing from the repositories).

Could we get an official, definitive statement regarding the roadmap for the final April release?

  1. Is the transition to Wayland as the default being delayed again?

  2. Will X11/Openbox remain the only officially supported default for this LTS release?

Thank you for a direct answer.

As was stated in the Lubuntu 25.10 Release Notes and as I reported earlier on this thread

In case following links is difficult; I’ll provide the text

We need help with development. Lubuntu is effectively in “maintenance mode” at this point, but we’d like to get back to developing full-speed. If you have spare time and wanted to get into open source development, please introduce yourself, we need you!

Details are as already stated, ie.

ie. we have packaged a newer LXQt, wallpaper & more are set; which can be seen by anyone who downloads & tests the beta release we just made.

Feature freeze was awhile ago, and was reported when FF was reached; the focus is now on bug fixing.

As per the release schedule, Resolute Raccoon is now in Feature Freeze.

Ideally, you will all now be focusing on bug fixing and not on getting new features into the release. However, if necessary, please follow the process for freeze exceptions: …

If you want more, you’ll have to wait for the release notes, which aren’t yet public sorry (drafted only, unless I missed something in the development channel)
