Problems installing Ubuntu as dual boot next to windows

Hi, I’m Arjen, looking forward to move away from Windows, but for some time going dual boot first.
I created a bootable USB stick and used it a couple of time in the demo-version from the disk. Now, I want to take the next step: install it in the dual boot way. Somehow, I get stuck, because in the process when booting from disk, I do not get the option to install it in this way. Below are the screens related to how I want to proceed with the installation, but dual boot is not included…

Somehow, I seem to remember that earlier, the first time I tried this from this disk, I did get the option, because then I also got into a screen where I could divide disk-space between Ubuntu and Windows drives - not anymore…

Am I overlooking something? Can you help me out? Would be great

Use Windows to shrink the NTFS partition. And make unallocated space for Ubuntu.

Make sure Windows fast startup/hibernation is off. Normal shutdown has it one & Windows will turn it back on with updates. If bitlocker that also must be off in Windows.

Make sure you boot USB flash drive in UEFI mode, it that is an option.

What brand/model system? What video card/chip? Some require different parameters or settings in UEFI.

After you have used Windows (Disk Management) tools to reduce the Windows partition size to create free space for Ubuntu, it’s often useful to reboot into Windows and allow chkdsk to run.

Thanks for the link to the documentation. Yesterday, I went cold turkey completely to Ubuntu. Although the docs said that, when another OS was present, I would be given the choice for dual boot, this choice was not given - so before I knew, Ubuntu installed and wiped Windows.
Luckily, I had everything backed up. And luckily, everythings seems to go pretty smoothly, so far. But it was a bit of a scary surprise, …

Therefore, at least, two parts of the installation process were missing, missed or skipped?

  • Type of Installation - Install Ubuntu alongside another operating system
  • Ready to Install - Review your choices

The final double check (Review your choices) is particularly important - if you had aborted the installation there, nothing on your disk would have changed. Windows would still be present and there is plenty of further help available within discourse.ubuntu.com

Dual booting is not a trivial procedure. Care is needed, especially where Windows 10/11 is involved.

Now, assuming you have your Windows product key or possibly your Windows OS was linked to a Microsoft account, you can re-install Windows if you wish?

Thanks for taking the effort to answer. Actually, I am happy that I am completely over to ‘the other side’ in one go. Now the period of getting used to things work over here has started. I’ll probably be back on this forum - but not anymore for this thread. Thanks again for helping out.
