Plymouth + Nvidia - lot of flickering during the boot

Hello all,

I am running ubuntu 25.04 (ubuntustudio) with root on zfs + zfsbootmenu instead of grub + nvidia 4070.
All perfect, just love it BUT during the boot the plymouth does appear for a very short period of time then it disappears and my screen flickers for 3 or 4 times and this drives me nuts

This is my kernel line:

sudo zfs set org.zfsbootmenu:commandline="quiet rhgb splash loglevel=3 preempt=full rcutree.enable_rcu_lazy=1" zroot/ROOT/ubuntu_25.04

My kernel:

# uname -a
Linux bobdenaut 6.14.0-33-generic #33-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Wed Sep 17 23:22:02 UTC 2025 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

This is my driver:

# ubuntu-drivers list
nvidia-driver-580-open, (kernel modules provided by linux-modules-nvidia-580-open-generic)

My selected theme:

# update-alternatives --config default.plymouth
There are 4 choices for the alternative default.plymouth (providing /usr/share/plymouth/themes/default.plymouth).

  Selection Path Priority Status
------------------------------------------------------------
  0 /usr/share/plymouth/themes/kubuntu-logo/kubuntu-logo.plymouth 150 auto mode
  1 /usr/share/plymouth/themes/bgrt/bgrt.plymouth 110 manual mode
  2 /usr/share/plymouth/themes/kubuntu-logo/kubuntu-logo.plymouth 150 manual mode
* 3            /usr/share/plymouth/themes/spinner/spinner.plymouth                       70        manual mode
  4 /usr/share/plymouth/themes/ubuntu-gnome-logo/ubuntu-gnome-logo.plymouth 150 manual mode

So guys, please, how do I get rid of the flickering ? I wanna see the plymouth nice and stable until sddm loads up.
If I load ISO live (it uses nouveau) it works perfectly!

Thanks

I’m just seeing an inconsistency here:

This suggests you installed Ubuntu Studio’s packages over Kubuntu. Per Ubuntu Studio Installer – Ubuntu Studio

Note that this does not convert your installation into Ubuntu Studio, but simply adds its benefits onto your existing installation. For regular support you should still seek help from the help channels of the flavor you installed.

No sir, it’s ubunstustudio 100%!
The theme you see was installed manually to test more themes

Oh, well then what you want is to reinstall plymouth-themes-ubuntustudio.

You can see how I got confused.

Whether or not that fixes your issue is up in the air. Bear in mind, though, that Plymouth doesn’t use the Nvidia driver; it uses the “framebuffer”, and the flickering you’re seeing is probably from resolution change between Plymouth and the login screen.

I thought so but it’s damn annoying … I just love the way live ISO loads, clean and fast without any flickering.

No, it didn’t (I just tested id)
I guess I must live with it…maybe I’ll close my eyes during the boot :)))

Ha! I picture this as something like burying your head in your hands saying, “It’s not that bad it’s not that bad it’s not that bad it’s not that bad…”

:joy:
