Plasma 6.6.4 (Wayland) Icons-Only Task Manager shows generic Wayland icon for new windows (system-wide)

Ubuntu Version:

Ubuntu Studio 26.04

Desktop Environment (if applicable):

KDE Plasma 6.6.4 (Wayland session)

Problem Description:

In the Task Manager, new application windows lose their correct application icon and instead display a generic Wayland icon.

This issue occurs across all applications, including KDE system applications (e.g. Security Center / System Settings), not just third-party or Electron apps.

The issue is reproducible whenever an application creates additional windows or toplevel surfaces.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open any application (e.g. Dolphin, Firefox, System Settings)

  2. Trigger a new window within the same application

  3. Observe task manager behavior:

    • First window appears with correct icon

    • New window briefly shows correct icon

    • Then switches to a generic Wayland icon

    • In some cases, task entries duplicate or replace each other

Relevant System Information:

  • KDE Plasma: 6.6.4

  • Session type: Wayland

  • Desktop: KDE (Ubuntu Studio)

  • Hardware: Intel integrated graphics (no dedicated GPU)

  • Display server: Wayland

What I’ve Tried:

  • Tried all three alternative widgets

  • Grouping set to “By program name”

  • Combine into single button enabled

  • Tested alternative icon themes (including Breeze)

  • Restarted and updated Plasma

  • Cleared/reset Plasma configuration related to panel/task manager

  • Issue persists across all applications including KDE system apps

  • Unable to test X11 session as it makes the OS unable to boot
