Plans for 26.10 and beyond

Hi all,

It has been very nice working with the Kubuntu team for the past 6 years, but it’s time we moved on to a desktop environment that was a little more retro and familiar. I think this will capture the best

With that, I present to you the future of Ubuntu Studio’s desktop environment: Win8DE.

I think that everyone will love the mid-2010s vibe of this. The layout is incredible, and it is an actual Wayland compositor with no X11 option at all!

This is what we’re doing. What I say goes. You can’t change my mind.

Before anyone says anything, check the date of this post.
But seriously, I’m packaging this as it might be a fun experiment and do not intend to make this Studio’s DE.

Oh, and Agentic AI in every nook and cranny. Especially in GNU Nano. But, generally, it’s important to stick stochastic parrots in all the things.

I can’t wait.

Hey, don’t knock Nano, especially when used inside Visual Studio Code. (cc @kenvandine )

In seriousness, I probably will try to actually use this if it’s packaged.

Been there, Done that, Win8 that is. Spent what seemed like hours clearing all those app boxes off the desktop to cut the eyestrain. Cannot remember if I ever got the Apps I needed on there. Especially not ADA friendly, but was Microsoft ever? Clearing it off made finding the start button quicker. Also the date of the post was unfortunately for me not Casual to the Obvious Observer. Once de-confused I had a good snort. Thanks!
