Permanent freeze on shutdown

Although that might work for now, the 6.11.0-29-generic kernel might not always be in the same position in the GRUB menu depending on updates and installations. It would be safer to use a stable identifier.

The saving enabled by GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT=true saves with a stable identifier.

No, I don’t think so

Grub counts from zero
Advanced 0ptions for Ubuntu = 1
Within Advanced Options, your second kernel is 2

Try this

GRUB_DEFAULT ="1>2"

Don’t forget to run

sudo update-grub

Thanks for that interesting suggestion! However, it seems a bit complicated because of the nested menu. Also, I am persuaded by halogen2’s suggestion that using the “default” method is preferable as giving a stable identifier, so that is what I have gone with - and it is working fine!

Thanks, everyone, for your help. I’ve now marked @rubi1200 's suggestion of booting an older kernel from the GRUB menu as the solution. Although @halogen2 guiding me through the editing the GRUB configuration file really helped to finish the job off properly! However, I appreciate the insights gained and morale support from everyone who commented.

I’m really happy with the way things have turned out with dual boot Ubuntu/Windows 10 on my laptop. Which gives me the confidence I need to proceed with setting my 2012 HP desktop in the same manner.

Older PCs are sometimes more responsive if an Ubuntu family member is installed.
Lubuntu 24.04 and Xubuntu 24.04 are worth a look.

I’ve just heard back from a friend who had extensive professional experience with Linux, so I felt to post his input on here, in case it adds anything:

One thought is that the BIOS for the system might be not the latest. You ought to be able to check it through the laptop manufacturer’s website. Worth looking at a later BIOS if one exists, and trying the later kernel again.

So I’ve gone to this page. And when I leave the default serial number, it returns several results for BIOS updates. However, when I input my actual serial number, then I get an error message about the number not being valid, how it looks like I am not from the Americas etc.

When I look in the BIOS, I see:

System BIOS version 1.10

So where does that leave me, trying to do this update from the UK on a model purchased in the UK? I am wondering if the support situation is complicated by the rebranding of Toshiba to Dynabook, following the sale of Toshiba’s PC business to Sharp - as I am seeing references online to that effect.
