Will there be Passkey support in Ubuntu 26.04 LTS?
Our company has switched to Passkey-only authentication for all employees, and Linux users are the exception, being forced to use the less secure Passwordless option.
Since there is still no updated roadmap for Ubuntu 26.04 LTS,
I would like to know if native Passkey support will be included in the upcoming release.
To rapidly transition 2,000+ employees to Ubuntu, we need the implementation of the long-promised features out of the box:
Integration into the installer itself:
HW FDE (TPM disk unlocking is critical for remote PCs)
Strong passkey support in Ubuntu 26.04 would be a great move and the timing couldn’t be more important with many looking for options other than Windows 11.
We are adding some kind of support to passkey in GNOME, but this requires also backend support.
Now, depending on the passkey I assume they are all just FIDO/U2F cards, so they should just work with PAM modules such as pam_u2f. This should just work without particular difficulties.
Since we already switched all users to PassKeys only mode (via MS Authenticator), we need a QR code authentication method, as well as YbiKey USB PassKey support.
The main issue for now is that authentication PassKeys is missing in the Intune Company Portal and Firefox browser (QR code is missing; the only option is a USB dongle).
