I went to search on Ubuntu Forums without logging in and got the message “Searching has been disabled.” on the search results page.
So I went to log in (for the first time) and received a message “Your username cannot be shorter than 1000 characters.” I assume this is a shortcut to disable new user registration on the forums.
I can use 3rd party search engines by restricting search to site:ubuntuforums.org.
Should new users expect/be guided to use external search engines for searching issues on ubuntuforums.org?
I am not completely sure of the answer but we always recommended users to use google most of the time it does a better job then the forums search ever did and yes some measures were put in place to stop new registration until the forum is properly archived.
