No live Medium up to 24.04

Hey all !

I have a Problem With all New Ubuntu Versions up to 24.04.10

No live media files were found, neither from Live Creator nor from Ubuntu with Etcher! This affects all Ubuntu versions:

Original Ubuntu, WinUX, Mint, and all others!

All old Ubuntu Worked with live Medium USB

All Debian versions are now working, including Anti-X!

And this is an Android question, specifically about the app you’re using to “burn” the ISO.

It likely needs to be updated to “understand” the newer Ubuntu ISOs.

The developer of EtchDroid says the app supports “Modern GNU/Linux operating system images, including Arch Linux, Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, pop!_OS, Linux Mint, FreeBSD, BlissOS and many more.”

But has questionable support for “Older GNU/Linux OS images < 2010 such as Damn Small Linux and Puppy Linux.”

Perhaps you should consult the developer of EtchDroid?

Where are you getting the Ubunt ISO images from? What architecture do you wish to install Ubuntu on? PC? What CPU?

Thanks everyone!

No, this isn’t about Android!

I just wanted to show that even with Etcher, it’s not recognized as an ISO live medium on Android!

I’ve tried Rufus, Etcher, Ventoy, Live Creator, USB Universal Installer, and other programs, even with Windows!

So, all Ubuntu distributions, regardless of whether they’re Mint, original Ubuntu, Winux, or others, show me the same error, and the laptop won’t boot!

But an original Windows installation and all Debian distributions work!

The problem only occurs with all newer distributions from Ubuntu 24.04 onwards!

It has nothing to do with Android; see my other pictures!

Thanks

Sorry for my Englisch

P.s.

The picture of the laptop was just a screenshot I took because of the size! I can gladly take original photos of the PC.

Since the new Ubuntu release, it can no longer find it as a live medium.

The older Ubuntu Linux distributions work without problems.

This only affects the newer versions, starting with

Ubuntu 24.04.3 and later.

I downloaded it directly from the Ubuntu website!

As you can see, no live media is recognized.

I tested it with all the new ones like Mint, Winux, Ubuntu, and others, of course, from the website!

Why does it work with Windows ISOs or with all Debian images or Fedora?

As I said, older Ubuntu versions work!

All versions from 24.04 onwards have this problem!

This is my laptop:

https://en.teclast.com/products/f7-plus-3

Of course, I also tested other USB sticks, HDDs, and SSDs with Ubuntu 24.04 and later!

And I created the live media on my PC with many programs, including Android, but nothing works as a live medium!

You can see it with the Live Creator!

Just one example.

It might be useful to know which images you tried. Where exactly (download link) did you download them?

I just prepared live usb sticks for 24.04.3 and 25.10 desktops using the Ubuntu Desktop documentation. Everything works as expected.

Hey i tested original Ubuntu,zorin , winux , Mint , quarkos Ubuntu,and more and test with !

Etcher , Rufus , live creator, Universal USB Installer , on PC and etcher USB ultimate on Android!

And others USB Stick and SD Card

And No found Live Medium

!!!

All Debian original, Anti x , mx Linux , and more Worked and found Live Medium and Work

!!!

Fodera Work

!!

Windows Work

!!!

No Ubuntu Image Worked and i have New Test on HP 250 G8 with i5-11gen Ubuntu and No Work No found Live Medium

P.S. I used Ubuntu for years, but unfortunately I have to switch to Debian when Ubuntu stops working.

It worked on my old Medion laptop, which was over 10 years old, so that’s why I bought the Winux + Zorin license!

Also on Teclast and HP Ubuntu No Work and No found Live Medium all other distros and win Work !

unable to find a live medium containing a live file system

That error implies no VALID ISO was found and thus asks if you want to download it.

That means usually

  • the ISO was invalid/corrupted during download; did you verify it as per docs
  • you reformatted the ISO using your ISO writing software incorrectly for the release/ISO and thus corrupted it; which can be done if your ISO writing software wasn’t updated to handle the newer ISOs (releases newer than 20.04 LTS). This shouldn’t happen if you clone or write the ISO without change to install media; but will happen if you reformat ISO incorrectly as per the error message (ie. valid media isn’t detected)
  • I have seen this error on a VM where the VM wasn’t allocated sufficient resources for the media check to report a valid ISO; ie. fix was to amend the VM settings and allocate more resources

Either way; issue is fixed by user procedural errors. Write the ISo as per Ubuntu’s documentation.

The strange thing is, older Ubuntu versions work!

P.S. I’m not the only one with this problem, as you can see!

However, the tips about unplugging and plugging in the USB didn’t work!

So the problem with Ubuntu is only

Again: why don’t you provide download links so we can test with exactly your used images?

@kittybua, it would really help if you could give us the steps to reproduce. That is the software you use, the steps you went through, and the buttons you pressed to get to the error you’re seeing.

Please, we don’t need a big list of distros, just focus on Ubuntu for now. Just pick one that doesn’t work, tell us the steps you’re going through, and explain in detail what exactly happens. If you can try it with another Ubuntu ISO that works fine, let us know which one.

Imagine i’ve never seen Etcher, tell me what you’re doing, and the options you’re choosing all the way along. ELI5

Everyone is experiencing the error that no live medium can be found!

However, older versions don’t have this error!

As I said again, many people with Ubuntu are experiencing this error starting with version 24.02 and later!

The problem isn’t limited to Ubuntu versions 24 and later with other distributions!

And I’ve tested everything possible!

I think it’s a bug in Ubuntu that’s been present since version 24.02 and later!

I tested something: I removed all the dashes – and lo and behold, all Ubuntu installations are now recognized as live!

So it’s due to the excessive number of dashes!

Simply rename the ISOs, for example, u.iso or w.iso for Ubuntu or Winux!

If there are two dashes at the beginning and end, as with AntiX, it doesn’t matter as long as there’s an underscore in between!

Live Creator now recognizes it as a live medium, and even Etcher doesn’t display an error message saying it’s not an ISO!

Everything else is due to too many dashes!

I only thought of this because I had a similar issue when unpacking RAR files; it wouldn’t unpack them if there were too many dashes!

But I think I’ll just leave anti-x before something happens again.

Well, this is definitely a bug in the app you are using and the way it checks the file names instead of the image type or content like other apps do, so you should contact the author. The images are usually fine with all other burning apps and your test with non-ubuntu images proves this is not an Ubuntu problem at all …

Yes, but it’s not just with Etcher, it’s also happening with Live Creator and Rufus!

So I don’t think it’s just an Etcher problem!

The problem is the hyphens

Try unpacking a RAR file with multiple RAR files containing many hyphens, and it will still throw an error!

Or try using a tar file with more dashes to unpack it.

That doesn’t work either.

As mentioned before I successfully created a live usb from Ubuntu 25.10 Desktop (filename unchanged!) today using Rufus on Windows 11.
So maybe there is a problem with your operating system or your file system.

The number of hyphens has not changed in the Ubuntu iso naming scheme since 2004 …
Feel free to check yourself at:

(in fact the naming of the ISOs overall has never changed since we started)

Have you also tried starting it with the PC using USB, the live drive?

I did an install from that usb. Successfully.
