Hello everyone,
Please feel free to just call me by my screen name (or “lantern” or “lant”). I’m somewhere between starting a midlife crisis, digital advocate, and embracing the dystopian system (that is, I’m eastern timezone USA). Probably first used Ubuntu with “Gutsy” or “Intrepid” - at least those stick out in my memory.
With shifting markets I may be looking for a new a new job. I ran across a ton of job postings for Canonical on LinkedIn. And learning about the future of Linux, Rust, and so forth I’m interested in possibly applying for a job. I’m currently a Red Hat systems architect/engineer/orchestrator (depending on how you define the term) in a little bit of a CI/CD pipeline. My project is pretty small, but part of a much more massive org.
I’m curious if there’s a place I can ask about what it’s like to work at Canonical without just talking to a recruiter directly.
Lastly, as far as contributing back to the community - I’m learning Rust, but it’s very new to me & not a strong suit. I would like to help contribute to Ubuntu more directly with testing or development, I do a lot of documentation work at my current job so I’d be happy to contribute there as well.
So, not sure where to get started. Would love to chat with an employee or two but also point me to where I might be able to help in other areas.
Thanks ogra, I’ll definitely give it a look. I was hoping someone who works at Canonical would stop by & be willing to share their experience. Are Canonical employees active on this discourse? I see some people (such as you) with the Canonical/Ubuntu logo on their profile - what does that signify (employees, forum volunteers/mods)? What about the folks w/ the small shield icon?
Sorry for so many questions, I appreciate all the clarification!
This site is using Discourse software, and users can select what flair they wish to show, being able to select whatever they’ve earned or have, I’m showing my Ubuntu News flair, but that could have been Ubuntu Member, Lubuntu Member too.
The Canonical flair will only be available to Canonical employees, and many will be on this site in their own time (ie. Ogra probably replied in his own time, not paid time), unless posting announcements etc that are part of their job.
I have a shield as I’m a [site] moderator, two shields show for those users who are administrators. Do note users may be moderators in some areas (so their posts in that area will show a shield) but be a normal user in other areas (ie. no shield can show for posts from that same user on other posts in other areas of the site). That is a feature of the Discourse software, and relates to software rights of the user.
