I recently reinstalled Ubuntu, and haven’t used it in years. I used the App Center to install MuseScore. It initially installed an older version of the program, but it did several updates, and it now has 4.6 installed. When I tried to open it, the cursor became a black rotating wheel, and the program did not start. I found this webpage. https://fostips.com/install-musescore-4-ubuntu-linux/, and followed the instructions under AppImage, including typing the command into the terminal. The program opened. I closed the program, but when I tried to open it again, I only got the black spinning wheel again. Should I try the Flatpac instructions on this page, or is there something else I need to do?

We’re limited to details you provide; and whilst you mention Ubuntu, you give no specifics, ie. is this a Ubuntu Desktop? Ubuntu Server? Ubuntu Core? install and what release of that unstated Ubuntu product.
The Start Here Guide gives some useful tips, and filling in the default template provides much of that suggested detail.

I’m assuming it’s the desktop version. I am very new to Ubuntu in many ways, and I have no IT training of any kind. I had previously tried to find this kind of system information on the desktop, but found nothing. I just typed cat /etc/os-release in the terminal, and it reported the following:

You have two installations of MuseScore installed. Do you know which icon represents which version of Musescore?
Have you used the App Center to uninstall/remove Musescore? Do you know how to remove the appimage version? Now, you want to install a third version of Musescore.
Three different package formats or ways of packaging an application.
By the way, go to System Settings>System>About>System Details or something like that.
P.S.
The App Center in Ubuntu 26.04 LTS will offer two Debian packed versions of MuseScore and a Snap packaged version which is at version 4.6.5. I take it you did not install the snap packaged version.

Just installed the snap version of MuseScore from the App Center. It does not load. Not from the home page in the App Center or from the icon in the show apps page.

Don’t keep trying to install the same software different ways. That won’t fix the problem. It’s installed (twice)…which only creates a new problem.
Let the volunteers here help you diagnose the problem that you encounter when launching that installed software.

Thanks ya’all for the responses. I didn’t know that by doing the appimage process that it was going to install the whole thing a second time. I have no idea what appimage or snap are … I was under the impression that this was going to fill in whatever gaps there were so that the program would run. As far as I can tell, there’s only one copy of MuseScore installed. (a) When I do a search after pressing on the large Ubuntu icon on the bottom left, there’s only one MuseScore icon. (b) When I go to to the home/snap location, there’s only one folder named MuseScore. (c) When MuseScore was opened right after doing the AppImage process, it was the same pinned icon on the taskbar that now isn’t opening.
I did not use the snap package process.
Questions:
- Is there a particular place I should look for the version of MuseScore that was installed through AppImage, which appears to work correctly?
- Should I uninstall anything, and if so, how do I do so?
- Any suggestions are welcomed.

Did you manually connect those interfaces as described in your output?
If not, please do so and then try musescore from terminal again to see if your output differs.
For the first 2, I had to enter my password, and I got a message for both that error: snap “musescore” has no plug named “cups-control / network-manager” For the second 2, no password was needed, and no messages came up, which I’m assuming means that these commands were successful.
When I typed musescore in the terminal, the following resulted. Obviously, the program did not start.

A review of Musescore bugs shows that the Snap works – Musescore developers regularly use it. Indeed, the Musescore developers created the Snap package (not a third party). So this seems a solvable problem.

You’re having problems with the SNAP version (like I did).
Alternatives are an older version - 2.3.2 in Ubuntu 26.04, from 2018 - that works fine as it always did. Or, the Flatpak version, much newer and improved.

So there are a couple issues…

The Snap isn’t working with 26.04 (tested and confirmed the crash).
This should be reported to the Snapcrafters group at snapcraft.io (by somebody with a login for that site). -
The Snap isn’t actually maintained by the Musescore Team. That green checkmark needs to be fixed.
This should also be reported to snapcraft.io (by somebody with a login) as a bug, and with that github link as supporting evidence. -
Uninstall the Snap:
sudo snap remove musescoresince it crashes and it’s not supported. -
Musescore publishes AppImages. That’s the package format supported by the upstream Musescore team.
Follow @celticwarrior’s instructions to imstall and enable the AppImage.
