but I donât think thatâs the error - the no symbols bit seems to be the error.
There is missing first line in your file.
xkb_symbols "dvorakukpa" {
Look at this post and compare with what your posted.
Thatâs true (sorry, I copied it from your revised code and didnât notice that was missing)
So I now have
xkb_symbols "dvorakukpa" {
include "gb(dvorakukp)"
name[Group1]="English (UK, Dvorak, with UK punctuation and accented characters)";
key <AC01> { [ a, A, agrave, agrave ] };
key <AC02> { [ o, O, ograve, ograve ] };
key <AC03> { [ e, E, egrave, egrave ] };
key <AC04> { [ u, U, ugrave, ugrave ] };
key <AC05> { [ i, I, igrave, igrave ] };
};
and
cat evdev.xml
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE xkbConfigRegistry SYSTEM "xkb.dtd">
<xkbConfigRegistry version="1.1">
<layoutList>
<layout>
<configItem>
<name>gb</name>
</configItem>
<variantList>
<variant>
<configItem>
<name>dvorakukpa</name>
<shortDescription>dvorakukpa</shortDescription>
<description>English (UK, Dvorak, with UK punctuation and accented characters)</description>
</configItem>
</variant>
</variantList>
</layout>
</layoutList>
</xkbConfigRegistry>
but I still get the same error message
Keycodes above 256 (e.g. <I256>) are not supported by X and are ignored
Error: No Symbols named "dvorakukpa" in the include file "gb"
Exiting
Abandoning symbols file "(null)"
Did you log out and logged in again after fixing the symbols/gb?
I did, yes - can try doing that again âŚ
Still the same error message âŚ
Where and when exactly do you see message?
I go to the keyboard layouts and add the new one. If I type in the test area, I get the old layout. When I select More Actions and then Preview, thatâs where I see the error message.
But bingo!! We have a result. à òèÚÏ are all working.
Thank you so much - if you are ever in the highlands of Scotland, you are owed a large dram!
Thanks again for your patience and help. Iâll mark this as solved, and hope it might help somebody else from tearing their hair out!
Test area is on the same page where keyboards layouts are listed. Of course you first need to switch to a layout before it becomes effective. The test area is intended for key repeat/delay/rate settings, not to test layout that is being added.
Oh. Of course it wonât work as long as no geometry definition for your new layout exists. And I am not sure whether geometry can be per-user or has to be system-wide.
Next time please explain what you were doing in sufficient details for others to follow and reproduce. We are not staying behind your shoulder and can only guess which rarely leads to useful answers.
Well, there is the âScottish Gaelicâ variant based on the standard âEnglish (UK)â layout with your additional grave accented vowels; you may consider submitting an issue upstream for Dvorak layout.
