FYI; This post is for folks looking at Mint, who might have older graphics cards.:
I like Mint, even put it on my old laptop to replace Win10, but when I put it on my current trade-in Win 11 tower, (a very good performer, (24 threads and tons of RAM, 64Gb), but with an old GPU, GTX-760 which is fine as I don’t game, it would not run my second monitor.
One thing I always treasured about Linux was its ability to run older gear, but NVIDIA no longer delves into GPUs that old for new driver updates, and Mint’s default can’t see monitor 2.
“Gave up” gives off the impression that they actually tried, which has never been the case. They drop old hardware like hot potatoes if it suits them. And it’s not just Linux, where you may get lucky, with the Nouveau driver being a haven for those “outcasts”.
As a rule, if you want to enjoy Linux without headaches, start by stopping to use Nvidia hardware.
Amen! Nvidia failed me why back when I had integrated graphics. They stopped supporting it. As a result I could no longer use Ubuntu that the time. Now I have integrated Intel and love it.
