Minimize open window by clicking on icon

Hi,

I know it from Windows, if you have a window open (for example Firefox) and you click on the icon again, then the window minimizes.
On Ubuntu this is not the case and I didn’t find anything in the settings.
So, is it possible to set it up so that the window minimizes when I click on the icon (like it is on Windows)?

Thank you for your help :grinning:

What version of Ubuntu are you using?

What is the default desktop?

Oh sorry, I have forgotten that. I am talking about 24.04 and GNOME :grinning:

I’m going to give you the biggest tip you can possibly get when using any Desktop Environment in a Linux-based operating system:

Don’t expect it to act like Windows. Workflows will have to be adjusted, and there’s a (slight) learning curve.

Cheers!

(Edited since I was wrong about the Ubuntu Dock as there is a way to make this work as kindly mentioned by @ogra )

It is possible to turn this on (at least on my 24.10 system here, but I guess it might have been around in 24.04) by going to the extension manager app, open the settings of “Ubuntu Dock” and under behavior there is a pulldown for “Click Action” (German UI here so i’m translating on the fly, things might be called slightly different) … It defaults to “focus” but you should be able to pick “minimize”

I did not find that on 24.04

However, this works:
gsettings set org.gnome.shell.extensions.dash-to-dock click-action 'minimize'

You could also use Lubuntu instead  In the default configuration, this works with Openbox. I don’t see it, but I’ve had several other folks say it has a sort of Windows look, so maybe you’d feel more at home.

Just offering an alternative:-
The extension dash-to-panel allows the application to minimise when the launcher icon is clicked.

If you like the window list in the Windows taskbar, there is a GNOME extension for this type of window list, which you can install by:

sudo apt install gnome-shell-extensions

Note that this Ubuntu package contains multiple GNOME extensions, not only this window list one.

Hi!

Thank you to you all for your suggestions!

It worked with the GNOME Extension Manager as well the gsettings thing :+1:
