Just wanted to say to the OP, thanks for this thread. I’m currently running the Studio LTS beta on a GTX 1050 based laptop. Runs great in Wayland… but the Xwayland layer doesn’t work for some of the older apps I still use, though it’s fine when it does work.

May end up going back to Lubuntu. I have used it before with ubuntustudio-installer so I can get my multimedia fix, but in a faster DE (again… KDE Plasma is nice though, probably one of the better optimized big DEs, but my PC isn’t new anymore :))

Just want to add here that I use Lubuntu 24.04 LTS also in 2026 on my Apple iMac5,1 computer from 2006. So it can be said that Lubuntu is compliant even to 20 years old hardware.

That’s of course only true if the corresponding hardware is still supported. Regrading the mentioned iMac that’s is still the case. The Radeon X1600 GPU uses the r300 Mesa driver which also receives in 2026 some nice improvements and optimizations.

So yeah, I can confirm that Lubuntu works even at an old old Intel Core 2 dual-core CPU which comes with just 4 GB RAM (of which are only 3 GB effectively usable) almost perfectly fine. But yes, this is true at the moment for X11. Will see when I find the time to check the situation regarding Wayland in Lubuntu 26.04 LTS.
