Problem Description:

Installing dual boot. Has been running 4 hours command line acquiring and extracting image from cp:///tmp/tmpd7vv7998/mount

I can pause and unpause but it never moves to the next line

You forgot to post what you are installing. Since you are posting at an Ubuntu forum does that mean you are installing some version of Ubuntu (Lubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, etc.) and if so, which release. You say you are dual booting but not what you are dual booting with. How exactly did you get this error message? Were you using the downloaded iso file of some Ubuntu written to a usb after verifying the download? What software did you use to put the iso on a USB or are you using some other method?

26.04 from iso on USB. No error message but it hung for 4 hours in install. I finally powered down and restarted the install. It looks like it had already done the partition so that was off on the second installation. Installation finished second time. It boots straight to windows and doesn’t give me the option choose Ubuntu

We are missing essential information that would help us troubleshoot this situation.

Please provide the following:

  • computer specifications, especially RAM and graphics card
  • does Windows boot normally?
  • did you turn off Secure Boot and Fast Startup before trying to install Ubuntu?
  • what did you choose for partitioning the second time around, Install Alongside?

If you can boot the computer with the live USB and get to the desktop, choose to Try Ubuntu and then open the terminal.

Run these commands and post the output here wrapped with code tags (click on </> and paste the output in the grey line before saving). Terminal output would be preferable to screenshots but do your best.

I had same problem but restarting install problem disappeared

You have not indicated whether you verified the iso after download. There is a link on the download page explaining how to do that and if it was a bad download, it won’t work. Simple thing to check. Also, you have not indicated which release of windows you have which is significant. Posting the output of the commands suggested above will also be helpful.

computer has 64gb ram

windows 11 boots normally

I did not turn off secure boot and fast startup first

I did install alongside both install attempts

My advice is:If you’ve been stuck here for more than 4 hours, just force a restart. If the system installation isn’t complete, GRUB won’t show up.

This suggests you tried installing alongside twice but neither attempt seems to have worked.

Also, you should never do a hard shutdown. It can cause software and hardware corruption.

Looping in @tea-for-one for another opinion on the best way forward here.

Yes, it looks like two installations and neither boots


In UEFI settings, disable Secure Boot and TPM

Boot into Windows 11, disable Fast Startup (i.e. Windows not hibernating)
Also run chkdsk
Back up your Windows personal data

Boot into a “Try Ubuntu” live session
Open Gparted and delete nvme0n1p6 and nvme0n1p7

Install Ubuntu 26.04 to the free space (or create your preferred partition size)
Install bootloader to nvme0n1 (not to a partition such as nvme0n1p1)


If you suffer another problem/failure, try boot-repair
Boot into a “Try Ubuntu” live session
Install Boot-repair - Second Option
Create the report and pop the pastebin link in this thread

I think I disabled Secure Boot, I didn’t find TPM in the settings. Fast startup was already disabled. I have used gparted to move the created partitions back into the partition with the windows11 install. I have reinstalled several times. I even redownloaded the iso and created a new usb and have the same issues every time. I don’t get to choose where the bootloader installs unless I use the manual partition. I have gone into that but don’t understand it well enough to use it. Here is the boot repair link. https://paste.debian.net/hidden/5bdb5bd1

You need to create free space using Windows tools.
After shrinking the Windows partition, reboot into Windows 11 and run chkdsk to verify that the Windows partition is OK

Windows boots and functions properly, I don’t know is much help in knowing the windows partition is ok

Ran chkdsk and no errors were found

I used manual partitioning and installed again. Made sure bootloader was on nvme0n1 Same issue

Your boot-repair report doesn’t show any obvious errors, therefore the next step is to check the UEFI settings.

Check that Fast Boot is disabled in the UEFI settings?
It may prevent access to one-time boot menu via dedicated keys because the device boots too fast

Reboot the PC and tap the dedicated key to access the one-time boot menu
e.g.F12 for Lenovo; F10 for Intel etc.

Do you see two entries?
Windows Boot Manager & Ubuntu?

Solved, your were correct fast boot was enabled. Once I disabled it everything worked properly. Thank you for your help.
