Long beep when shutting down computer

Long beep when shutting down computer
Hello, under Ubuntu, when my computer turns off, a long beep occurs until it shuts down completely.
This is not the case under my Windows session.
My motherboard is an Asus TUF B450M-PLUS GAMING. I’am on ubuntu 24.04.02 LTS
I should point out that I tested the shutdown using several methods: power button / menu bar button / keyboard shortcut. I should add that no beep occurs at startup.
Do you know what this beep means and how to stop it?
Thank you in advance.

A clue: although fan control is enabled in my BIOS, I recently installed Cooler Control and Psensor.
But there’s no overheating alert. I used the “Optimize All” function in the ASUS EFI BIOS, an automatic method for setting the minimum duty cycle.

I would definitely check in the Bios first…

Mobo speakers should exclusively be used for outputting error codes. One of the best and fastest ways to diagnose issues.

Then if you are absolutely sure all is good you can block the PC speaker, and this will NOT interfere with your systems sounds.

BEWARE to first read why this is not a good first messure.

To Blacklist the pcspkr module: Add the line blacklist pcspkr to a file in /etc/modprobe.d/ directory, such as /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf. This prevents the pcspkr module from loading at boot time.

Remove the pcspkr module: If the module is already loaded, you can remove it using the command sudo rmmod pcspkr.

Thanks for your reply. If I blacklist pcspkr, will that keep the potential error beeps during boot? Which beeps are disabled?
Thanks!

No, that only removes the kernel module. The kernel is software loaded to RAM during boot. Before boot, the pcspkr module has no effect.

I’ve entered the commands, but the motherboard beep persists.

sudo rmmod pcspkr. give

rmmod: ERROR: Module pcspkr is not currently loaded

Hi.
Maybe it’s not the motherboard. Just read something about GPU beeping on power loss or fan issues.

Is there any chance this could be an indication that the CMOS battery is running down? I know this can cause BIOS-level beeps. Usually that’s on start-up, though, and not sure why Windows would give different results than Linux. Just a thought.

Thank you for your answer. I just changed the cmos battery… for a model not expired and recognized brand…

Problem solved :grinning:: it was the recently installed CoolerControl software that was causing the beeps.

Nice find and share, I can see this took some good investigating to find the source of the issue…Good Job
