Quick heads-up on a small change to how Launchpad builds packages: our builders now enables a few dpkg build profiles by default when setting up the build chroot. This keeps us in step with where dpkg has been heading in recent releases.
A bit of background
Build profiles let maintainers tweak what gets built and which build dependencies get pulled in. There are two of them that matter here:
-
noudeb (on by default in
dpkgsincehirsute): It skips building udeb packages marked withBuild-Profile: !noudeb. -
derivative.ubuntu (new in
dpkgas ofresolute): It lets Ubuntu avoid carrying a delta against Debian by tagging dependencies with it.
However, enabling them in dpkg wasn’t enough as Launchpad installs build dependencies through sbuild when it sets up the chroot, so we had to enable the profiles there too.
What we did
launchpad-buildd now passes the right profiles when setting up the sbuild chroot:
-
noudebforhirsuteand newer. -
derivative.ubuntuforfocaland newer, just in case any backports use it.
What this means for you
Honestly, probably not much! The noudeb profile hasn’t been used for build dependencies so far, and only a couple of packages use derivative.ubuntu right now (systemd and pillow), so we’re not expecting anything to break.
This is already live in launchpad-buildd 268~803~ubuntu24.04.1, and the new builder images are rolling out to all architectures now.
