Desktop Environment (if applicable):
GNOME desktop

Problem Description:
I always use the US English with deadkeys layout, but with one recent update that functionality disappeared. I have been switching keyboard layouts, but I cannot seem to bring it back.

Relevant System Information:
Standard issue HP workstation HP HP Z4 G5 Workstation Desktop PC with Logitech natural kbd.

What I’ve Tried:
In system configuration, I have tried to switch keyboard layouts, but that has not helped either.

Before Posting:

after some heavy duty troubleshooting, I found that

  1. the XKB dead-key layout is still active,
  2. but ibus engine is not a good indicator
  3. the fix was to completely remove the standard englsh layout, and leave only the english with dead keys.

This all developed from a recent upgrade, but I cannot know which one. For now, the problem is solved.
