Before every Ubuntu LTS point release (except for the first one), the hardware enablement (HWE) kernel gets a major release update which is the backport of the latest supported release (stopping at the next LTS).
The next Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble Numbat) point release is 24.04.3 which is scheduled for 2025-08-07T00:00:00Z (^1). For this point release, the HWE kernel will be updated from 6.11 (backport from 24.10 -generic kernel) to 6.14 (backport from 25.04 -generic kernel).
The 24.04 HWE kernel update is planned for the 2025.06.16 Kernel SRU Cycle (^2). If you are feeling adventurous, you can already try a preview of the HWE 6.14 kernel by installing the linux-generic-hwe-24.04-edge
meta package, which is currently available in noble-proposed. Please note that the -edge
variant of any kernel is not supported and not recommended for production environments.
We encourage the Ubuntu community to actively participate in testing and provide feedback through the appropriate channels, such as the Ubuntu Kernel mailing list, Ubuntu Discourse and Launchpad bug reports.
