Thanks. I do know that we can insert images directly into posts here, but when I tried to do that yesterday (Saturday, 13th June 2026), the upload of the image (screenshot) to my post got “stuck” at 100% . So I used the workaround of uploading the image to imgur.com and “embedding” it to my post. However, I found out the following post in the “AskUK” subreddit (in Reddit) claiming that imgur.com images may be blocked in the United Kingdom (and as I know that you - @paddylandau - are based in the UK, I guess that may explain why you weren’t able to see the image):
Having said that, I’ve tried to edit again, a few minutes ago, my original post / reply - “The Ubuntu Forums Archive - #8 by ricmarques” - and upload the image to it and, this time, it worked. So, you should now be able to see the image that I uploaded in that post of mine
I have this issue every time I attempt to upload any image. I usually need to retry the same “paste” 2 to 3 times before it finally succeeds! Don’t know why.
Yeah, uploading images is pretty hit and miss for me too — mostly miss, but I don’t keep a count and don’t upload many images to begin with, so this may be my biased gut feeling — even though I scale mine down to 360p, when the exact details don’t matter.
Stuck at 100%, which happens suspiciously quickly and at some point a timeout must trigger the error message that it failed and I should try again.
Thanks for the update. It sounds like the Imgur link was the issue. Glad the direct image upload worked this time and that everyone should be able to view it now.
My issue of uploading images dates back to last fall sometime. I never bothered to say anything until recently, because others started mentionning the issue.
If it sticks at 100%, I would also try one upload with the browser dev tools network tab open. In Discourse that often means the client-side upload finished, but the final server response or CDN/proxy check did not come back cleanly. If you can reproduce it with a small PNG and note browser, size and whether an error appears in the console, that is probably more useful for the site admins than retry counts alone.
OK, I figured I’d try sending myself a PM with an image and this happened:
<html><body><h1>504 Gateway Time-out</h1>
The server didn't respond in time.
</body></html>
That’s a copy of the response after a 50 seconds timeout. I don’t have much experience with the network tab and couldn’t figure what to copy how, so this is what I got.
Sadly, that doesn’t seem to make a difference. I’ve just tried with another PM draft; first with MTU 1500 to confirm the issues is still there. While the “loading” spinner was still turning, I switched to MTU 1320 but it still timed out. Then I reloaded the page without cache (CtrlShiftR in Firefox) and tried again; still the same.
I think, I’ve also tried that before, accidentally, because, for a time I had MTU 1320 set pretty permanently.
The uploading images issues and many more will be addressed after the discourse upgrade. We do not know the exact time frame I am just making everyone aware that the people who can effect change know about the issues and we are communicating with them regularly now.
