Issue with pipewire

Problem Description:

I usually can see all my hardware listed in Carla Patchbay and in my Digital Audio Workstation (Ardour), but today I can only see “system” as input and output. After some research I realized I was not fully using JACK / Pipewire. So I installed it and enabled it. Then my hardware were back in my DAW but pavucontrol didn’t work anymore (I guess because I disabled pulseaudio).

Now I am a bit lost, I don’t know what my system use, should use… and everything seem broken audio-wise. All I want is to go back to the default Ubuntu Studio configuration, to be able to use pavucontrol for casual use of audio, and having my DAW able to list all my hardware.

Some things I noticed

  • $ pactl info returns: Connection failure: Connection terminated
  • Ubuntu Studio Audio Configuration Offers me to “Disable PipeWire-Jack” So I guess it is enabled
  • Carla can’t start the engine: Could not connect to Audio backend 'PulseAudio', possible reasons: RtApiPulse::probeDeviceOpen: error connecting output to PulseAudio server.

I just solved my issue by following this guide to enable PipeWire then choose Jack/Pipewire on my DAW Ardour.
