Do you have active applications from all those third party sources?
It seems that your setup may be too bespoke for volunteers (myself included) to offer a concrete fix.
I have no further advice right now, but I will return if I find anything helpful.
I have no idea if I’m even using any of those ‘other software’ sources - I suspect most of them are left over from my initial install of Ubuntu 20.04lts, got more added after upgrading to 22.04lts, and then some perhaps from my current 24.04lts.
…now ya know why I just disabled software updater all together, and manually only update firefox.

in my Software & Updates there’s all these things below in it’s ‘UPDATES’ that I’m not sure I should update as one may be the one that corrupts nautilus (so I’ve left them alone and only install ones for firefox):
These are all snap packages, they operate completely distinct from the host system (and are unrelated to the debian based package management the update-manager manages) you can safely update them, there is no technical way they could influence the host install

If not installed, then first sudo apt update && sudo apt install inxi
This might actually be what got you into the current broken state. If any of these foreign package archives has replaced an essential system library or other components and this has not manually been cleaned up when you moved to a new Ubuntu release it will cause unpredictable behavior of the whole system in the end (debian packages follow some very strict packaging policies that are often not met by packages from third party repositories so they can easily undermine the expectations the package system has (i.e. that all the policies have been followed by all packags installed))

OK, so went into software updater settings, to the updates tab, switched from ‘Custom’ to All ‘Updates’ just to see if it would trigger the infamous ‘Partial Upgrade’:

…then, with the Software Updater setting still at All Updates, I ran Software & Updates and went to Updates which was empty from Issues With Software Updater - #53 by 911thsquadron , I clicked ‘refresh’ (to get a new list of some of the “469 packages that can be upgraded” perhaps), but loading updates seemed to just spin and spin for hours w/o any new items:
You should not be getting an invitation to do a Partial Upgrade on a released version of Ubuntu. Apparently it indicates package conflicts or broken dependencies.
I always see the Partial Upgrade offer when running the development version. That is because the development version is under development and so we expect package inconsistencies. The rule is never accept the offer because Partial Upgrade runs apt-get dist-upgrade which according to the man page does
dist-upgrade
dist-upgrade in addition to performing the function of upgrade, also intelligently handles changing dependencies with new versions of packages; apt-get has a “smart” conflict resolution system, and it will attempt to upgrade the most important packages at the expense of less important ones if necessary. The dist-upgrade command may therefore remove some packages.
Something similar happens with apt full-upgrade
full-upgrade (apt-get (8))
full-upgrade performs the function of upgrade but will remove currently installed packages if this is needed to upgrade the system as a whole.

…so, just choose ‘Continue’ instead of ‘Partial Upgrade’?
…but everything works fine BEFORE the updates/upgrades, and some things get broken AFTER it… so, these new packages creates conflicts with existing packages breaking dependencies in its trying to update/upgrade?
How would one repair these broken dependencies / conflicts after the updates/upgrades create them, like repair the major one: nautilus?
I know before the last restoring of the image, my hibernate button dissappeared from one of the updates along the way, and after restoring it, it is there again… similar with nautilus - broken after updates, working after restoring image.
I guess you mean ‘upgrade’ using the terminal? (since ‘sudo apt update’ only updates the package list…)
I will change the settings in software updater to ‘security updates only’ then run ‘sudo apt upgrade’ in terminal mode… report results later if:
- it was even able to install the upgrades
- it corrupted anything (like nautilus)

The first one came up fast and normal, second normal but took a bit longer to come up, and the third never came up - seemed to be locked up / unstable
…not sure with what to do with this - do you think that once the updates/upgrades get installed and nautilus ‘corrupted’, using say, the first code, will bring it up ‘normal’ and not just in read only? Moving along, once the above recommended change is done the other ‘files’ type pop ups for ‘saveas’, ‘download to’, etc. will not be corrupted either?

The suggestion to amend the command executed by the Nautilus Desktop icon could be implemented after you have upgraded 469 packages (333 security related) and assuming Nautilus still suffers (rendering?) corruption.
According to my research, that is the intention.
However, as mentioned in post 43, your setup is very unique and only you will be able to verify if it works.
Again, that is the intention but only you can test it due to the specific nature of your PC.
After 15 days without a solution, have you considered a fresh, pristine installation together with restoring your data backup?
Moreover, with 4GB RAM and a PC vintage 2007, Lubuntu or Xubuntu should be considered.
Any reason not to start from scratch?
