Is possible the OS having control over the cpu cooler fan?

Here Lubuntu 24.04.3.
The mainboard is Biostar A960D+V3 AM3.
Unhappily the BIOS does a wrong action when controlling the cpu cooler fan.
Bios is AMIBIOS allowing select cpu fan speed when temperature is high.
The problem is in BIOS configuration the setting for select cooler fan speed is related with CPU temperature, but possibly because a bug the BIOS use values from mainboard southbridge temperature instead cpu temperature.
Is possible in BIOS disable the cpu cooler fan controll so allowing OS to control the cpu cooler fan.
Have any software or configuration for Lubuntu control the cpu cooler speed when a temperature reach a value ?

Update UEFI (“BIOS” - Actualk BIOS doesn’t exist in the consumer market since ~2012). Troubleshoot from there if still required.

That mainboard use BIOS.

If it’s so old to have BIOS be happy it still works.

Same advice: Update BIOS to the latest and troubleshoot from. If already on the latest just use it until it fails for good (it shouldn’t take long). And, of course, make sure it’s clean. Also the thermal is almost certainly overdue to a repasting for many years now. What you perceive as “wrong” is likely related with the hardware age and lack of proper maintenance, nothing to to with OS/software.

In summary, have realistic expectations

You can pretty much do whatever you like with the fan speed control, if the sensors and controller are wired up correctly. I have done that in the past, but did so with lower level tools, so I cannot tell you if there are graphical frontends to help with that. It all starts and ends with the lm-sensors package. You can then configure which sensor to monitor for adjusting fan speed based on its temperature reading. But you should first check if the sensors show plausible values; lm-sensors needs to know how to interpret their readings.

You should also be extra extra extra sure that your CPU has a thermal trip sensor, so it automatically shuts off when overheating, otherwise you risk frying it. It should also be able to somewhat gracefully throttle itself under high temperature situations.

As a late addendum, fancontrol just popped back into my head; that’s what I was thinking about but couldn’t remember when writing my previous comment. It’s suggested by lm-sensors.
