Hello all,

I’ve been doing some research in this topic on running Ubuntu as a guest inside a Hyper-V virtual machine. This work stemmed from me migrating a Linux Mint system from a VirtualBox guest to Hyper-V, which required a fair amount of research, tinkering and I think ultimately some discovery as well. While this may be a third-party derivative of Ubuntu, I think a lot of my work applies nicely to the Ubuntu project and I’m hoping I can share some of what I’ve learned with the broader community.

I’m at the point now where I’ve achieved my original goal (running an Ubuntu-based distro in Hyper-V with all desktop UI enhancements functional.) I’m beginning to pull my thoughts together, constructing something resembling a series of steps and will attempt a “first pass” at applying these steps to a fresh installation to verify what I’ve learned. At the same time, I’m hoping I could have a wiki page to start inserting this information into and iterate on as I refine these steps and procedures.

Some searching has led me to the Ubuntu Community Help Wiki, and specifically this virtualisation category, and this distinct page. Those seemed like good jumping points for me to create a dedicated HyperV page where I was thinking I’d start with a brief introduction of what it is, why a (potential) Ubuntu user may be interested in it, and what options are available (WSL, Quick Create images, and a manual install with the aforementioned steps.) Since I didn’t have access right away, additional searching led me to the WikiGuide page, where I was prompted to join the ubuntu-wiki-editors Launchpad team. I did this some time ago, and also dropped them a short message explaining why I wanted to join.

In the meantime, additional searching led me down quite the rabbit hole of how many different documentation sources the Ubuntu project has! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: Despite this, I felt confident that the previous pages were a good fit for future contributions. Just now though, I came back to this Discourse category and noticed this recent post of someone else who was interested in contributing. This led me to learn that the wiki. and help. sites are being merged into a new wiki (awesome!) I’d be interested in helping migrate the other virtualisation pages as well. I attempted to log in with my Ubuntu One account, but was met with this error:

The error message reads:

Auto-creation of a local account failed:

The database is currently locked to new entries and other modifications, probably for routine database maintenance, after which it will be back to normal.

The system administrator who locked it offered this explanation: The primary database server is running in read-only mode.

Regardless though, from my reading the last topic, I may not be able to create pages anyway.

Would someone please confirm if I’m going down the right path and this is where I should contribute, and if so, could I have some assistance with getting going?

Hey @slfhstd . Thanks for showing interest in contributing to the new wiki. This definitely seems like an interesting topic that could be a good fit for the wiki.

I just logged in myself to the wiki now and it seems there is indeed a database error. This happened a few days ago, and may have been linked with a broader infrastructure issue. We thought it was fixed but it seems to be causing problems again :cry:.

This is why the wiki is still marked as “under development” — it’s a work-in-progress. It hasn’t been officially launched and there are a few rough edges.

Unfortunately, many of us who are able to investigate the database issue are currently on company-wide annual leave. We should be able to look into it early next week and get it up and running again. At that point, I will update you here ASAP.

In terms of who can edit and create pages, anyone with an Ubuntu One account can edit. If you are an Ubuntu member, you are able to also create pages right away. Otherwise, you need to meet some basic criteria to get the ability to create pages; namely, 10 or more edits and an account that is 4 days old from the first edit.

However, in a case like this, I, or someone else with create page rights, would be happy to create pages so you can start editing/migrating.

Thanks for getting back to me @shanecrowley and @rubi1200. I totally understand that there are some rough edges right now. I know Canonical was under a DDoS attack lately, not sure if that’s the specific issue here but my sympathies are with you all regardless. I still have plenty of organizing to do on my end and will wait patiently to hear back.

Hopefully we can get it up and running soon. It’s great to hear you’re making progress in pulling the information together.

Once I’m back to work next week, I’ll keep you updated. When the wiki is editable again, I’m happy to work with you in any way I can to support you in getting your efforts published.

Note that login and editing seems to have been operational on the wiki for the last few days and I have not noticed any issues since the hiccup reported above.
