Intel AX211 (8086:51f0) Wi-Fi firmware repeatedly crashes on Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 4,7 (Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS)

Hello everyone,

I’m experiencing repeated Wi-Fi firmware crashes on a Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 4.

System Information

  • Model: Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 4 (21E3S06300)
  • CPU: Intel Core i5-1235U
  • Wi-Fi: Intel Alder Lake-P PCH CNVi WiFi (PCI ID: 8086:51f0, Rev 01)
  • OS: Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS
  • Kernel: Linux HWE 6.17

Issue
The Wi-Fi disconnects randomly during normal use. The Intel iwlwifi driver reports firmware crashes and automatically resets the adapter.

Kernel log messages include:

  • Error sending SYSTEM_STATISTICS_CMD
  • Device error - SW reset
  • Queue 1 is stuck
  • WRT: Collecting data
  • restart completed

Troubleshooting already performed

  • Updated BIOS to the latest version.
  • Removed custom iwlwifi module configuration.
  • Rebuilt initramfs.
  • Tested multiple kernels (OEM and HWE).
  • Disabled Wi-Fi power management.
  • Tested on both office Wi-Fi and a mobile hotspot.
  • The issue persists across different wireless networks.

I have also submitted a Launchpad bug report with the complete Apport logs.

Has anyone experienced this issue on the ThinkPad E14 Gen 4 or with Intel AX211 (PCI ID: 8086:51f0)? Any known workaround or firmware fix would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Firstly I’d apply all upgrades available, and see if that resolves your issue.

Your details show you’re behind, as the HWE kernel for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (ie. noble) isn’t 6.17

 linux-image-generic-hwe-24.04 | 7.0.0-28.28~24.04.1 | noble-security | amd64, arm64, armhf, ppc64el, s390x
 linux-image-generic-hwe-24.04 | 7.0.0-28.28~24.04.1 | noble-updates | amd64, arm64, armhf, ppc64el, s390x

Second; you mention two stacks only

have you tried the GA kernel stack?; it’s often see as the most stable option (why Ubuntu Server provided it by default for so long).

Kernel 6.17 is known for being extremely buggy.
You might want to try another kernel.

Hi @guiverc I attempted to fully upgrade the machine by running update, upgrade, --fix-broken, and full-upgrade. However, after the full upgrade, the system started booting directly into the memory test instead of displaying the GRUB menu.

To get the system to boot successfully, we had to modify the network configuration by adding a working DNS server in NetworkManager. After making this change, the system was able to boot normally.

i have tried to downgrade the kernel version 7.0.0-28-generic as well but same issue.

this machine has the lower kernal version but here also same issue
