Hey everyone, I’m taking over as the maintainer of this tutorial. Together with the rest of Ubuntu Desktop documentation, I’m migrating it to a new official Desktop documentation set, now available here: Install Ubuntu Desktop.

You can read more about the reasons for the migration: Desktop docs taking a new direction. And don’t worry about the guide’s long URL, that’s set to change in the near future.

I wish it would warn you that creating a bootable USB drive erases all existing data on the USB stick, though. I lost my files

Please add a warning that this WILL DESTROY ALL DATA PREVIOUSLY ON THAT DRIVE.

Also, there is no guidance for when Bitlocker encryption window says, ‘bitlocker waiting for activation’, which I found out generally means that it is turned on but in a suspended state. It then needs to be turned on and then turned off.

I’m surprised https://rufus.ie isn’t included in tutorial for Windows/Linux users as an truly free option. While balenaEtcher is not a bad program it has commercials in it for other (paid) products from this company.

We’ve also found that balenaEtcher has some privacy issues identified by Tails OS. We’ll discuss it within the Desktop team. For now, there’s a note recommending Rufus as an alternative.

The app menu icon changed to the Ubuntu logo in 24.04.

Updated in the new version.
