Import Sticky Threads From Ubuntu Forums Question

Would it be worthwhile bringing over some of the sticky threads from UF?

I am thinking perhaps from the Security section, perhaps the Old Hardware sticky here:

Or perhaps some of them need editing/reworking to make them more suitable for UD?

Thoughts?

An excellent question.

  1. The current plan is that the read-only UbuntuForums will use the same URLs for several years. So all the stickies will be in the same place, just as discoverable as before.

    So there is no hurry.

  2. Discourse is currently the home of lots of existing documentation and tutorials. There are some slow-moving discussions around what should be moved and where. Including stickies.

Perhaps some stickies might be integrated into existing documentation or tutorials or other categories.

Some might be edited into FAQs or other off-ramps offered in the “start here” area before a new user starts a question.

There are many possibilities and many stakeholding teams. I want whatever consensus solution to be well-used and maintainable. We won’t always have mörgæs to do that thankless task for us.

Makes perfect sense.

Actually, mörgæs approached me specifically about his sticky thread but once I looked at other threads the question came to mind.

Unfortunately, he has decided not to move over to Discourse so the question of maintaining the sticky is in line with what you wrote.

Good news is that we could still link people, when relevant, to the old threads on UF.

Thanks for the response, much appreciated.

What about the heads-up about malicious commands?

As with the Old Hardware sticky, the Staff will take their time to ponder what should be migrated and how. There are many stickies to consider.

Just to be totally clear:

  • Posting malicious commands, or any other form of malicious activity, is already a violation of the Ubuntu Code of Conduct. It is neither considerate, nor respectful, nor collaborative.

  • Malicious commands have always been zero-tolerance both there and here.

  • If you see a malicious command posted, please flag it. Don’t comment on the public topic “Hey, don’t do that!”, don’t try to moderate on your own. Just flag and then step away out of hammer-swinging range.

We also want whatever we end up using to be current. Some of these very long threads no doubt contain info that relates to out-of-date releases, and isn’t of much use now. TBH, the thought of working through some of these long threads makes me feel tired.
