I'm running 24.04 ext4 in a Virt Manager VM. Host is Tumbleweed. How to resize my 24.04 VM?

Ubuntu Support Template

Ubuntu Version: 24.04 VM ext4. (Virt Manager, Tumbleweed is Host)

Desktop Environment (if applicable): GNOME

Problem Description: I have 14GB of free space on the VM. I tried to run Timeshift but it gave a bunch of errors (it was a few weeks ago and I don’t remember the error details). How can I expand the size of my VM? I want to add 16GB to the virtual partition.

Can I do the expansion within the VM? Or do I also have to run some commands in the Host?

(PS: I’m used to the old forum. Is this the right forum to post this question? Just want to make sure I’m posting to the right place for this question.)

You use commands in the host system to expand the size of a VM disk.
As your host is Tumbleweed (rpm), I would suggest that you find the exact commands via the relevant forum.
In the meantime, here is some info if you were to use:-

  • Ubuntu host
  • qemu/kvm
  • qcow2 disk image

I had a similar issue in Virtualbox with Ubuntu as guest and Tumbleweed as host.

Enlarging the disk size with Virtualbox was easy, then I inserted a gparted ISO, started from that one and enlarged the size of the partition within the guest. This works very well.
